UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Freshman
Sal Fusco (Colonie, N.Y.) pitched 5.1 innings of no-hit ball and the UMass Lowell baseball team rallied in the late innings to force extra innings, but Penn State walked off with a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.
For the second consecutive day, the River Hawks (2-16) knotted up the game in the final frames, this time on a
Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) infield single that plated
Jeff Mejia (North Reading, Mass.) to score the visitors' first run since the opening inning. Penn State's (13-3) Ryan Ford delivered the game-winning hit following a catcher's interference call that moved a runner in scoring position.
With an early lead following
Steven Passatempo's (Medford, Mass.) RBI groundout in the first inning, Fusco struck out five before allowing a hit that included a four-pitch third. Following their first hit of the day in the sixth, the hosts were able to load the bases and score their opening run on sacrifice fly from Ford. A bases-loaded walk in the seventh put Penn State on top in Fusco's final inning of work.
Martin's late inning heroics came with two outs and a runner on first and third following a pair of singles. The sophomore extended his team lead with his 11th RBI of the season with his second hit of the afternoon.
The River Hawks are slated to host Holy Cross on March 20 for their home opener of the 2019 season at 6 p.m.
