ARLINGTON, Va. -- The UMass Lowell baseball team could not stave off a furious George Washington comeback, as the hosts pulled out a 5-4 comeback in 10 innings to take the series on Sunday afternoon.

Leading 4-0 after the second inning, the River Hawks (1-12) saw the Colonials (7-6) tie the game with two outs in the ninth and scratch across the game-winning run in the 10th. GW always took the game in the ninth, but the potential deciding run was thrown out at the plate during the game-tying two-run double.

"This was a tough finish to a good series," said Head Coach Ken Harring. "We stopped hitting after the second inning, but [Sal] Fusco and [Kendall] Pomeroy pitched very well. We were victims of some soft hit balls in the ninth that found spots on the field, but that is baseball; it can be a cruel game sometimes. I thought Joshua Becker did an incredible job coming into that tough situation in the 10th, and he did what we needed him to do. We're still growing as a team and these games will help us along the way."

UMass Lowell began where it left off yesterday and did not wait long to get on the scoreboard, as the first two batters of the day reached and Andrew Roden (Sherill, N.Y.) singled home Michael Young (Chester, N.J.). With two outs in the frame, Oscar Marchena (Miamia, Fla.) extended the lead with a two-run single to plate Roden and Steven Passatempo (Medford, Mass.).

Young scored his second run of the ballgame on Cam Climo's (Billerica, Mass.) double to left in the second to provide the 4-0 advantage for the River Hawks.

Freshman Sal Fusco (Colonie, N.Y.) held the Colonials scoreless until the sixth inning and scattered three hits before the hosts finally broke through on the scoreboard. Cade Fergus delivered the key hit in the ninth for the hosts as his two-bagger forced extras.

The River Hawks continue their Spring Break trip with two games at Radford on March 12 and 13.
