LOWELL, Mass. -- Despite a strong third quarter the UMass Lowell women's basketball team could not keep pace with Stony Brook, and suffered its seventh straight loss, 64-47, on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Athletic Center.
Brianna Rudolph (Lynn, Mass.) and
Ren'Cia Rolling (Lansing, Ill.) both finished within one point of matching their career highs, as Rudolph shot 9-of-14 from the field to finish with 24 points and Rolling connected on four three-pointers en route to an 18-point performance. The graduate student also grabbed 10 rebounds for her third career double-double, and second of 2018-19.
"I thought
Angel Agoth (Rochester, Minn.) played phenomenal, she was coming off an injury and thrown into the game because I did not think we were getting the right type of coverage; to have come in and respond like she did was probably one of the high points of the season for our coaching staff," remarked Head Coach
Tom Garrick. "I thought our players fought really hard and cut the deficit to four points with about two minutes to play in the third, but we just did not have enough juice left in the fourth quarter."
The River Hawks (6-18, 2-9) headed into the third quarter trailing 40-24, but rattled off nine of the half's first 12 points to regain some momentum, sparked by six points from Rudolph. A Rolling triple cut the deficit to single digits (46-38) with over five minutes to play, and four more points from the guard brought UMass Lowell within 46-42 in the final 127 seconds. UMass Lowell outscored the visitors 18-9 in the third quarter.Â
Stony Brook's Oksana Gouchie-Provencher began a 7-0 run for the Seawolves (18-6, 7-4) to overlap the final two quarters to build the lead back to double-figures. Gouchie-Provencher finished with 10 points, and was one of four players in the visitors' lineup to reach double digits, led by Jerell Matthews' 17 points.Â
In a back-and-forth opening quarter, India Pagan scored Stony Brook's first six points of the contest, but Rolling's first three-pointer gave the hosts and early 5-4 advantage. The Seawolves responded with a 7-0 spurt, but the River Hawks battled back to only trail 17-14 heading into the second.
UMass Lowell continues the three-game homestand with a matchup against UAlbany on February 13 at the Tsongas Center. The program's #SpreadRespect game will tip at 7 p.m.
