River Hawks Bounce Back with 72-62 Victory against New Hampshire

Box Score (PDF)

LOWELL, Mass. –
Redshirt-junior Christian Lutete (Silver Spring, Md.) logged his eighth double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds to help propel the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (13-11, 5-4 AE) to a 72-62 victory against America East foe New Hampshire (3-19, 1-8 AE) on Wednesday evening.

With the decision, the River Hawks tally their 13th win of the season, setting a new Division I program record.

"It's good to get a win," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "I thought after the first 10 minutes we were really good defensively. We were locked in and had a lot of good stops. I think we stuttered a little bit offensively at the end, but we had built up a considerable lead and our defense was good enough that we were able to overcome that. I have a lot of pride in this win because we were able to do it almost entirely through our defense."

Lutete was joined in double figures by senior Shawn Jones (Bridge City, La.) with a season-high 17 points. Freshman Joey Glynn (Portsmouth, N.H.) added 13 points, including a personal-best, 7-for-7 effort from the foul line. Freshman Bryce Daley (Pittsfield, Mass.) turned in a season-high 10 rebounds, as well, marking the first time since November of 2017 that two River Hawks have boasted 10 boards apiece.

The Wildcats led by two possessions in the opening minutes, but free throws from redshirt-senior Josh Gantz (Grove City, Ohio) and Lutete followed by a layup from Daley gave the home squad its first lead of the night, 11-10, just five minutes into play. The advantage was short-lived, though, as New Hampshire responded with a quick, 7-1 spurt to regain the upper hand, 17-12, at 13:09 in the first.

New Hampshire worked to grow its lead to six at 25-19 before a pull-up jumper from Daley sparked a 25-7 run that spanned the final 9:48 of the half and included 10 points from Jones to put the River Hawks on top, 44-32, at the break.

Henderson laid one in for UMass Lowell's first bucket coming out of halftime, the Wildcats would score on back-to-back possessions to close the gap to just 10 at 46-36 with 16:54 still to go. However, Lutete and Glynn combined for 12 of the game's next 14 points to help the River Hawks extend their buffer to 57-38 at 10:21.

The home squad led by as many as 21 at 62-41 thanks to a jumper from Jones and a triple from Gantz with just over nine minutes to go. The Wildcats continued to press and were able to cut the difference in half in the final minutes, but the River Hawk defense closed out the victory to snap a two-game skid.

The Wildcats still own a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series. Next up, the River Hawks head out for a three-game road swing beginning at Stony Brook on Saturday, February 9 at 7 p.m.
