LOWELL, Mass. -- Senior goaltender
Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) of the No. 14 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team has been named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month, which was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Hernberg, who won the award for the second time in his River Hawk career, posted a 4-0-1 record in five starts for the River Hawks in the month of January, posting a 2.16 GAA and .923 save percentage with one shutout, ranking third and fourth in the league, respectively. Hernberg recorded three efforts with two goals or less, including 33 saves in the 2-1 road win at No. 2 UMass to start the new year. He backboned the River Hawks to a No. 17 national ranking and was the only undefeated goaltender in the league in the month. Hernberg previously won the award in November of 2017.
"Chris had an outstanding month. He was instrumental in our team picking up key points throughout the month," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "He continues to show a high level of compete and continues to earn his starts during this final league stretch."
Hernberg has posted a 7-2-1 record in 10 starts for the River Hawks this season, totaling a 2.57 GAA and a .905 save percentage with two shutouts.Â
UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, February 8
th against Boston College. The River Hawks are 1-0-1 against the Eagles in the season series so far this year. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7 p.m. with the game being televised regionally on New England Sports Network (NESN) and in Canada on TSN2.
