Tyler Wall made 26 saves in his eighth win of the season for the River Hawks
BOSTON – Junior goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) notched 26 saves in his eighth win of the year to lead the No. 17 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 3-1 road victory at No. 12 Northeastern on Friday night at Matthews Arena in Hockey East play.
The River Hawks improve to 15-8-2 overall (9-4-2 HEA) with the win, while the Huskies drop to 15-8-1 overall (9-6-1 HEA). UMass Lowell is now undefeated in its last eight games (7-0-1), which marks the longest current unbeaten streak in the nation. The eight consecutive wins on the road are the most since 2013.
"I thought it was a good hockey game, I thought both goaltenders played exceptionally well," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "I thought there were chances for both hockey clubs and in the end we got one more than they did, so we are pleased with the points. It's tough this time of year to get points in Hockey East."
Freshman Reid Stefanson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) added an empty-netter for his sixth career goal with 24 left in regulation to seal the victory for UMass Lowell.
Junior co-captain Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) scored off a rebound to give the River Hawks the 2-1 lead with 4:59 to go in the game for team-leading 10th goal of the year.
Northeastern's Brandon Hawkins scored a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 11:36 to go in the third frame.
Junior forward Kenny Hausinger's (Anchorage, Alaska) ninth tally of the year opened the scoring in the game just 2:56 into the second frame on a power play marker for the River Hawks. Seth Barton (Kelowna, B.C.) and Mattias Goransson (Slottsbron, Sweden) earned assists on Hausinger's team-leading third power play marker of the year. Goransson finished the night with a game-high three points (3a).
The teams skated to a scoreless first period with UMass Lowell owning a slight, 9-7 shot advantage.
Wall notched 12 of his 26 saves in the second period, while his counterpart Cayden Primeau recorded 26 stops in the losing effort for Northeastern.
Senior forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) totaled a game-high eight shots on goal, while sophomore forward Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) won a team-high 14 of 21 face offs (67%) for the River Hawks in the victory.
UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, February 8th against Boston College. The River Hawks are 1-0-1 against the Eagles in the season series so far this year. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7 p.m. with the game being televised regionally on New England Sports Network (NESN) and in Canada on TSN2.
