LOWELL, Mass. - The UMass Lowell women's basketball team will faceoff against Ivy League opponent Cornell for the third time in series history, when they welcome the squad to Costello Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The 2019-20 season has been paced by the freshman class, scoring 52% of the offense for 155 total points. The River Hawks saw their best bout of action when they took on Yale (11.21) at Costello Athletic Center where the squad put up a season-high 59 points, making 23 field goals for their season-best .371%.
 
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red is currently on a three-game win streak with victories against NJIT (68-44), Niagara (82-59) and Delaware State (77-51). Senior forward Laura Bagwell-Katalinich is Cornell's biggest threat both defensively and offensively, leading the squad in points (16.2 per game) and rebounds (8.2 per game). Four different Big Red student-athletes are currently ranked in the NCAA top-100 for their efforts in double-doubles (Bagwell-Katalinich, 14th), steals (Sramac, 53rd), blocks (Mbanefo, 66th), and minutes/game (Widmann, 81st).
 
SERIES HISTORY VS. CORNELL
The Big Red owns a 2-0 all-time record vs. the River Hawks, which includes a 63-54 win on November 17, 2018 in Ithaca, N.Y. at Newman Arena. UMass Lowell shot 75% from the line with four different River Hawks going 2-2. Ren'Cia Rolling recorded six points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks headed out on their sixth game of the season, dropping a 63-38 decision on Sunday night to Providence. Freshman guard Kaylen Banwareesingh had a break-out game, sinking 5-10 field goals for 11 points. Senior guard Ren'Cia Rolling saw her fifth game of the season where she scored 10 points or more. Freshman forward Denise Solis topped her personal-best by reaching double-digits in the third period with her 10th rebound. The River Hawks saw their best action in the second quarter, outscoring the opponent 14-11. UMass Lowell was able to outrebound the home team 44-33, setting a new season high.
 
NCAA TOP-100
Solis ranks 29th overall in the NCAA for free throws made, making 28 out of 41 attempts. Her best game came against Yale (11.21) where she went 6-6 on the line. Rolling is the only other River Hawk to rank in a statistical category, averaging 35.7 minutes per game, to take the 79th spot overall.
 
SOLIS STARTS SOLID
Freshman forward Denise Solis has had a great start to her River Hawk career with three games with 10+ points. She registered a career-high 18 points at Colgate and a career-high nine rebounds against UMass. She has averaged 3.7 points in the first half of games and 7.0 points in the second half through six games this season.
 
JUST ROLLING ALONG
Rolling has scored 10+ points in five of six games this season, which included a season-high 16 points in the loss to Yale last Thursday night. In the first four games of the year, she posted multi-steal efforts in each. Her 1.8 steals per game ranks sixth among America East players. She has made at least one 3-point field goal in each of the six games this year. Her 27% 3-point field goal percentage leads the UMass Lowell roster.
 
PROTECT THE HOUSE
Solis currently leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game for the River Hawks, which ranks fourth among America East players. Her 3.3 offensive rebounds per game is second in the conference, helping the squad earn the second spot overall with 14.2 offensive rebounds per game.
 
BANWAREESINGH OFF THE BENCH
Rookie forward Kaylen Banwareesingh put together a career game this past Sunday at Providence, recording a personal-best 11 points and nine rebounds. Banwareesingh also played a season-high 24 minutes.
 
FINDING THE RIGHT COMBO
The River Hawks have used a different starting lineup combination in all six of the contests this season, with Denise Solis being consistent through every one.
 
NEW FACES
Garrick's first recruiting class brings eight newcomers to the River Hawks in 2019-20. The group incldues five freshmen (Denise Solis, Shamyjha Price, Jaliena Sanchez, Kaylen Banwareesingh, Kalkidan Mamo), two junior college transfers (Chasidey Willis, Tiahna Sears) and a transfer from VCU (Niya Johnson).
 
A LOOK BACK
The River Hawks ended the 2018-19 campaign with the programs most wins since 2014-15. Due to a tiebreaker they missed the America East Championship on the final day of the regular season. Graduate student Bri Rudolph led the team with 13.3 points per game to earn All-Conference Third Team honors, while Ren'Cia rolling set the program's DI single-season mark with 123 assists.
