River Hawks Welcome Massachusetts in Home Opener, Before Road Tilt with Kansas

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team, who is 0-2 on the fresh season, will host Massachusetts for their home opener on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. before heading back out on the road to visit Kansas for a 2 p.m. tilt on Sunday, Nov. 17.
 
KENNEDY CUP
Thursday' s matchup will mark the women's basketball installment of the 2019 Kennedy Cup Challenge between UMass Lowell and Massachusetts. The Kennedy Cup Challenge was established in the fall of 2018 and will be awarded annually to the university with the most wins in the cumulative season series between teams from UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst. With an 8-6 advantage across all sports, the River Hawks won the inaugural challenge last year. John Kennedy, a longtime supporter of both athletic programs, holds degrees from both institutions, Lowell Technological Institute ('70) and UMass Amherst ('76), with degrees in Mathematics (BS) and Accounting (MS), respectively.
 
LOOKING AT THE RIVER HAWKS
- Denise Solis has 13.0 ppg, while Shamyjha Price is averaging 9.5 with Ren'Cia Rolling coming in next at 9.0.
- Rolling has five steals, while Bri Stiers has dished out four assists
- Stiers also has grabbed a team-high 19 rebounds
- The River Hawks are shooting 29.0 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from beyond the arc 

LET'S REWIND...
The River Hawks hit the road for their second contest of the season as they traveled to Colgate University on Sunday afternoon. Despite a strong first half performance the River Hawks fell to the Raiders in a score of 54-73.
 
A WIN WOULD...
- Be the River Hawks second win against Massachusetts and first over Kansas
- Give UMass Lowell its first victory of the 2019-20 season 

SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
- Destiney Philoxy has 14.0 ppg, while Bre Hampton-Bey is averaging 11.0
- Philoxy has six steals, while Vashnie Perry has dished out 10 assists
- Maeve Donnelly leads the Minutewomen with 14 rebounds
- Massachusetts is shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 19.0 percent from beyond the arc 

SCOUTING KANSAS
- Holly Kersgieter has 16.0 ppg, while Zakiyah Franklin is averaging 15.0 with Mariane DeCarvalho coming in next at 14.0
- DeCarvalho has five steals, while Brooklyn Mitchell has dished out eight assists
- Kersgieter has also leads with a team-high 17 rebounds
- The Jayhawks are shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 27.7 percent from beyond the arc 

AIN'T NO PARTY LIKE A TSONGAS CENTER PARTY
The River Hawks are 9-19 all-time in games played at the Tsongas Center, with a 7-18 record in the Division I era. The victory against Vermont on February 11, 2018 was UMass Lowell's first win in the building since the 2016-17 season.
 
A LOOK BACK
The River Hawks ended the 2018-19 campaign with the programs most wins since 2014-15. Due to a tiebreaker they missed the America East Championship on the final day of the regular season. Graduate student Bri Rudolph led the team with 13.3 points per game to earn All-Conference Third Team honors, while Rolling set the program's DI single-season mark with 123 assists.
 
NEW FACES
Garrick's first recruiting class brings eight newcomers to the River Hawks in 2019-20. The group includes five freshmen, two junior college transfers and a transfer from VCU.
 
FLYIN' SOLO
Denise Solis gave the River Hawks their only lead of the game on Sunday against Colgate by going on a 9-0 solo run. Solis recorded a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds in the contest.  
 
THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Shamyjha Price had a breakout game against Colgate with a personal-best 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
ROLLING UP THE RECORDS
Last season Rolling took over as the program's Division I single-season assist leader with 123 helpers. Her total ranks ninth all time, as Bianca Simmons set the mark with 146 in 2012-13.

IDOM ON THE MARK
In her first career start, Kharis Idom went 8-of-13 from the field and scored a career-high 21 points.
 
SANCHEZ SINKS IT
In her collegiate debut, Jaliena Sanchez pushed the full 40 minutes on the court going 6-for-8 on the line for a .750 free throw percentage.
