River Hawks Shine in Home Opener against UMass Boston, 88-45

LOWELL, Mass. – Graduate student Christian Lutete (Silver Spring, Md.) tallied a game-high 19 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (2-2) won its sixth consecutive home opener with an 88-45 victory against UMass Boston (0-1) on Tuesday evening.

"It was good to get home and play on campus after a three-game road trip to start the season," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "I thought the best thing we did was share the basketball. Almost everybody scored tonight, and we had 26 assists and 33 made shots. That's a great percentage and means guys are really sharing the basketball."

As a team, the River Hawks shot a season-high 51 percent for the game with 11 different scorers. Junior Obadiah Noel (Frederick, Md.) added 14 points, while sophomore Joey Glynn (Portsmouth, N.H.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Sophomore Darius Henderson (Pasadena, Calif.), registered career highs with nine points and nine rebounds, as well.

The Beacons scored on their first trip down the court, but the River Hawks answered with eight straight points, including a steal and fast-break slam by Noel to build an early, two-possession lead. UMass Boston answered with a 7-1 spurt to pull ahead, although Henderson would spark a 21-4 run that was capped off by a dunk from freshman Connor Withers (Manassas, Va.) to give the home squad a double-digit buffer, 30-14, with 8:29 remaining in the first half.

The River Hawks worked to lead by as many as 23 in the period at 43-20, following back-to-back threes by junior Jordyn Owens (Montclair, N.J.) and graduate student Josh Gantz (Grove City, Ohio). The Beacons cut into the difference with eight consecutive points, but Lutete scored five in the last two minutes to put the home squad ahead, 52-32, at the break.

UMass Lowell held the visitors without a point through the first seven minutes of the second half, stretching their margin to 69-32. Charlie Mitchell snapped the silence for the visitors, but the River Hawk defense kept the opponents to just 13 points in the remaining minutes to secure the 88-45 victory.

The River Hawks remain at home this weekend when they host their first ever regular season tournament beginning against Jacksonville on Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m.
