HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite a strong first half performance the UMass Lowell women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season after traveling to Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
"Today was eye-opening in terms of us not playing to the best of our abilities," Stated head coach
Tom Garrick. "All credit goes to Colgate, they ran their system and out competed us which I think highlighted our youth in a negative way."
Freshman
Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) recorded a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds while going 4-7 on the line. Fellow classmate
Shamyjha Price (Pittsburg, Pa.) also had a breakout game with a personal-best 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Raiders tallied the first points of the game after a River Hawk turnover, but senior
Ren'Cia Rolling (Orlando, Fla.) responded 20 seconds later when she banked a three-point shot from just outside the rightwing.
Going on a solo 9-0 run for the River Hawks, Solis was able to push UMass Lowell past Colgate in a score of 16-13 just before the first quarter buzzer ended.
After some back-and-forth action, Colgate gained the advantage by pulling away in the second quarter to increase the deficit 35-23 going into the half.
The River Hawks were able to cut the gap to 38-45 in the third quarter when freshman
Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) took off on a fast break to make a driving layup.
Unfortunately the River Hawks were unable to respond with more than 10 points in the fourth quarter, as Colgate finished out the contest on a 12-0 run to end the game at 73-51.
Up next, the River Hawks will welcome Massachusetts for their first home contest of the 2019-20 season in a Kennedy Cup Challenge game on Thursday evening at the Tsongas Center.
"It's not going to be an easy game, Massachusetts is a formidable opponent playing very well right now," commented Garrick. "We're going to have to devise a plan in the system for our players to buy into and get better at. I'm glad we have a few days off to prepare in order to put our best foot forward on Thursday night."
