LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell Hockey team earned a 3-1 victory to pick up the series sweep against Alabama Huntsville on Sunday afternoon at the Tsongas Center.
The River Hawks improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Chargers drop to 0-2 on the year.
"We are really excited to start our year with two victories, obviously we played a good opponent," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "It was a harder game tonight, I thought our game away from the puck was more detailed and I enjoyed the game tonight."
Alabama Huntville's Tyr Thompson tallied a power play goal to cut UMass Lowell's lead to 2-1 with 12:40 to go in the third period, but senior forward
Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) responded less than a minute later with his second tally of the season to seal the win for the River Hawks.
Freshman forward
Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden) added to the River Hawks lead (2-0) with a nice rush up the left side of the ice for his second career goal at 14:14 of the middle frame.
The River Hawks got on the board early in the first period for the second consecutive night on
Carl Berglund's (Hammaro, Sweden) first collegiate tally just 1:39 into the opening stanza.
Freshman forward
Matt Brown (Wood Ridge, N.J.) registered a game-high five shots on goal in the win. Senior forward
Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.) won 13-of-17 face-offs on the evening in the win for the River Hawks. Sophomore forward
Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ont.) also won 8-of-9 draws on the night.
Senior goalie
Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) stopped 12 shots in the win, while UAH's David Fessenden totaled 37 saves in his first career start for the Chargers.
The River Hawks owned a 40-13 shot advantage on the night, which included a 15-4 edge in the second period alone.
UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, October 11th at Minnesota Duluth, the defending NCAA Champions. Game time from AMSOIL Arena is 8 pm (ET) to kick off the two-game series.
