LOWELL, Mass. – After securing a berth in the 2019 America East Tournament for the second year in a row, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (4-8-2, 3-2-1 AE) will take on the Binghamton Bearcats (8-3-2, 2-1-1 AE) for their last home contest of the season in a senior day celebration on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Â
LET'S REWIND…
The River Hawks are coming off a two-game week where both matches rolled into extra minutes. First up for the squad was a Thursday night showdown against Vermont where the River Hawks played the full 110 minutes with neither team being able to notch the game winner, eventually ending in a 0-0 draw.
Â
Following their tilt with Vermont, the River Hawks saw their chance at redemption from last years' America East Championship when they traveled to UAlbany for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Great Danes. After being down one-nil at the half, sophomore
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) found the back of the net from classmate
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) to score the equalizer.
Â
The remainder of the game went by without a score, bringing the River Hawks into their seventh overtime contest of the season. Unfortunately, two minutes into the second overtime and the Great Danes secured the win off a corner kick, ending the game at 2-1.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
Binghamton comes into the matchup against the River Hawks with a solid 8-5-2 record and 2-3-1 record in America East Conference play. Leading the Bearcats this season with five goals is junior Essie Bonney, while Olivia McKnight, a standout freshman for the Bearcats, leads the team with 12 points, tallying four goals and four assists.
Â
UMass Lowell is currently 2-3-1 against the Bearcats. The River Hawks and Bearcats last saw action with each other during the 2018 season where UMass Lowell came out on top with a 3-1 victory. The River Hawks will look for a win in order to move up in the America East standings.
Â
25 YEARS STRONG
This season the team would like your help in celebrating 25 years of River Hawk Women's soccer. The goal is to have 125 donors, which marks the 125th year anniversary of the University, donate $25 dollars to celebrate the 25th season of women's soccer.
Â
In the past, funds have been used for locker room renovations, enhancing the high-performance environment, and securing a more challenging out of conference schedule. The squad is at this point in history because of the previous 24 teams that have paved the way, and as they continue to build the program, they need your help!
