LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-6, 0-2 AE) is set for a busy three-game week that culminate back home at Wicked Blue Field for Senior Day. Action begins on the road on Tuesday, October 15 when the squad makes the short trek to Harvard for a 6 p.m. tilt. On Friday, October 18, the River Hawks visit America East foe New Hampshire at 6 p.m. before heading home for Senior Day and Alumni Day on Sunday, October 20 against Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
RIVER HAWK REWIND
The River Hawks dropped their only game last week to move to 5-6 overall in 2019 and 0-2 in America East games. After battling back in the fourth quarter to force overtime, the team eventually succumbed to AE opponent Vermont, 2-1, as time expired in double overtime on Oct. 11. Graduate student
Leah Cardarelli (Acton, Mass.) tipped in the game-tying goal in the 58th minute to score the squad's lone goal of the week.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Through 11 games, sophomore
Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) leads the River Hawks with five assists and 11 total points. Freshman
Sofie Knook (Amsterdam, Netherlands) boasts a team-best five goals for 10 points, as well. In the cage, senior goalkeeper
Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) has tallied 31 saves with a 1.88 goals against average.
SCOUTING HARVARD
The Crimson is currently 8-3 in 2019 after winning seven of their last eight. Last week, Harvard dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 17 Boston College on Oct. 10 before defeating Brown, 9-1, on Oct. 13. Bente van Vlijmen is first on the team with seven goals and 18 points. Casey Allen has dished out a team-best five assists and adds to the offense with 13 points. Goalkeeper Ellie Shahbo boasts 37 stops with a .755 save percentage.
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
The Wildcats sit at 7-6 overall this season and 1-1 in America East action. Last week, UNH upset No. 21 UAlbany, 4-3, in double overtime on Oct. 11 before facing a 4-1 setback against Providence. Finn Caron paces the team with nine goals and 21 points. She is one of three Wildcats with three assists, as well. Jemma Woods is 7-4 in the cage with 61 saves and a .678 save percentage.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders own a 6-6 record heading into the week, but will visit Brown before making the trip to Lowell. Most recently, Holy Cross downed Vermont, 2-1, on Oct. 13. Minke Kooman leads the squad with seven goals and 17 points, while Madeline Alderfer is first with six assists. Marcia LaPlante has turned away 101 shots for an .808 save percentage.
A HELPING HAND
Jenna Berger matched a Division I single-game program record with three assists in the win against Colgate. She also leads the team with a total of five assists on the year.
MAKING HISTORY
For the first time in its Division I history, UMass Lowell cracked the top 20 in the NCAA RPI rankings for the week of Sept. 23.
SPREADING THE LOVE
The River Hawks' offense has been a true team effort this season, as 12 different River Hawks have already logged at least one point in 2019. That mark ties for the second-most point scorers in a season during the program's Division I era.
PLAYING THE BEST
In order to prepare for their challenging conference schedule, the River Hawks played three nationally ranked opponents in their first four games this year.
STARTING STRONG
For the sixth consecutive year, the River Hawks won their season opener with the Fairfield decision. That contest also marked the second straight season-opening shutout for
Eva Berkhout and the squad's back line.
WEEKLY AWARDS
Freshman
Kate Miller was named America East Rookie of the Week on Sept. 24 after tallying five points in the win against Sacred Heart. Classmate
Sofie Knook also earned a Rookie of the Week nod on Sept. 17 after propelling the River Hawks to victory against Ball State with a pair of goals. She was previously tabbed Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3 following a successful collegiate debut that included a big defensive save in the 38th minute against Syracuse.
