BANGOR, Maine – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team was handed a 79-45 loss to Maine in America East action on Wednesday night.
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) led the way for the River Hawks (6-15, 2-6) with 13 points off the bench, while
Linda Svenne (Riga, Latvia) added 11 points. With three assists,
Ren'Cia Rolling (Lansing, Ill.) moved into a tie for second place in the program's Division history with 102 helpers in a single season.
"Maine has good players who took advantage of the open looks, and credit them for making the shots," commented Head Coach
Tom Garrick. "Games like tonight are going to help us build character, we had a couple of good spurts but we are not satisfied with that as we move onto Saturday's contest."
The Black Bears' (14-7, 7-1) Parise Rossignol netted 32 points and connected on eight three-pointers to lead all scorers.
After
Brianna Rudolph's (Lynn, Mass.) opening basket, the hosts went on a 14-0 run to open a 12-point advantage. The first of Svenne's triples ended the drought and also accounted for Rolling's 100th assist, as the guard became only the third player in the programs Division I history to record 100 or more helpers in a single season.
Halfway through the second quarter, UMass Lowell cut the gap to 29-19, but the Black Bears closed the half on a 12-4 run, including a deep buzzer beater to enter the intermission with a 41-23 lead.
The River Hawks open February on the road as they head to Vermont for their series finale against the Catamounts on the 2nd at 2 p.m.
