River Hawks pick up series sweep with 4-1 win at Colgate

Senior goalie Christoffer Hernberg notched 23 saves in his sixth win of the season

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell Hockey team earned a 4-1 win at Colgate in non-conference play in the series finale on Saturday night at Class of 1965 Arena.

UMass Lowell upped its record to 11-8-1 overall with its third consecutive win, while the Raiders drop to 6-12-2 on the season. The River Hawks are now 9-3-0 in 12 road contests this season.

"We are ecstatic to get two points and sweep the weekend at Colgate," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "It was a good hockey team, we managed to get ahead in the games, it was a good game for our guys, we got in some penalty trouble in the third and had to kill a few penalties, but they stuck with it."

The River Hawks owned a shutout streak of 145:39 dating back to the second period of the UMass win until the Colgate tally in the third period.

Junior co-captain Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) added his second goal of the game and eighth of the year with 40 seconds to go in the third stanza on an empty netter to seal the win for UMass Lowell. Lohin finished the night with a game-high three points (2g,1a) for the River Hawks.

Junior defenseman Mattias Goransson (Slottsbron, Sweden) scored on a one-timer slapshot off a feed from Lohin to make it 3-0 River Hawks with 8:09 to play in the third period. Colgate finally got on the board in the game just over a minute later on a power play goal by Trevor Cosgrove.

Lohin scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year after sophomore blueliner Anthony Baxter (Oakville, Ontario) helped create a turnover in the neutral zone to give UMass Lowell a 2-0 lead with 13:49 left in the middle stanza.

Senior forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) opened the scoring in the game with 12:01 left in the first period on a backhander that beat Colgate's Mitch Benson low blocker side for his fifth tally of the season for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell owned a 7-5 shot edge at the end of the opening stanza.

UMass Lowell Senior goaltender Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) registered 23 saves in his third consecutive start for the River Hawks. Benson stopped 14 shots in the loss for the Raiders.

The River Hawks return to action at home on Friday, January 18th against Vermont to kickoff Star Wars weekend on Rowdy Jedi Bobble Head Night. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7:15 p.m.
