Providence, R.I. – In its final non-conference game of the season, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (2-5-3) narrowly fell to Brown (4-4-1) in a 3-2 overtime game at Stevenson Field on Tuesday evening.
"I'm happy to close out the non-conference schedule with a game against a strong team that bested us in a number of areas because it can help us prepare for conference play and show us what we still need to work on," said interim head coach,
Mira Novak. "I have to give our team credit for coming back from down 2-0 against a strong opponent and scoring two big goals."
The game featured a series of runs, as each team scored twice within three-minute spans, but Brown went away with the victory after a goal by Abby Carchio just 21 seconds into overtime.
The River Hawks allowed 10 shots in the first half, but did not allow the Bears to capitalize, making the sixth time they've held an opponent scoreless in the first stanza.
In the second half, Brown came out controlling the pace and scored two quick goals. Carchio struck first in the 58
th minute, while Sydney Cummings followed it up with a goal of her own in the 61
st minute.
UMass Lowell attempted just two shots in the second half, but luckily for the River Hawks, both of those shots landed in net, off the feet of
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) and
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.).
Fabian narrowed the margin in the 76
th minute with a perfectly-executed header. She was set up after Vieira sent a cross to
Karah Fleet (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in the box, who passed it to Fabian on the left side. Fabian's goal comes on the same day she was named one of top 20 freshman standouts in the region by
New England Soccer Journal. She now has seven points on the season.
Vieira scored just minutes later, setting up her own goal after sneaking past her defender and chipping it up and over Brown goalkeeper Christine Etzel. Vieira's goal – her first of the season – tied up the game and propelled the teams into overtime.
Less than 30 seconds into extra time, Carchio scored again, ending the game with a shot over the head of
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.).
Schneider and
Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) both made solid appearances in net, as UMass Lowell played in its fifth overtime game this season. Huff stopped four shots in the first half, while Schneider took over in the second half, making four saves, as well.
The River Hawks begin their conference quest this Sunday against Hartford at 1 p.m.
