River Hawks Set for Weekend Action in Connecticut

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell field hockey team is set for a two-game stop in Connecticut this weekend. The River Hawks first visit Fairfield on Saturday, September 15 for a 12 p.m. start before taking on Sacred Heart at Yale on Sunday, September 16 beginning at 2 p.m.
 
River Hawk Rewind
UMass Lowell earned a hard-fought, 4-3 victory in double overtime against Columbia on September 7 to improve to 3-1 on the young season. Senior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) tallied three of the River Hawks' four goals, including the game-tying tally in the 67th minute and the game-winner in the 87th minute.
 
Leading the Flock
Through four games, Torrie Huk paces the River Hawks with six goals and 14 points. Junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) follows with seven points. Freshmen Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) boasts a team-best four assists. Junior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) owns the 3-1 record in the cage, totaling 13 saves and a .722 save percentage.
 
Scouting Fairfield
The Stags own an impressive, 6-1 record so far in 2018. Most recently, the team defeated Vermont, 3-1, on Sept. 9 and Hofstra, 1-0, on Sept. 12 to extend their current win streak to four games. Danielle Profita has a team-best four goals and 10 points through seven games. Sam Giordano, who adds to the offensive effort with eight points, leads the squad with four assists. In the cage, Zoe Rosen has made 23 saves for a .793 save percentage with two shutouts.
 
Scouting Sacred Heart
The Pioneers are 5-2 right now, but will visit Dartmouth before hosting the River Hawks. In its last outing, the team earned a 2-1 win against Villanova on Sept. 9. Allie Brouhard is first on the squad with three goals and seven total points, while Kelsy Hopkins follows closely with six points. Hopkins and Bridget LaRiccia each total two helpers. Hailey Power has already turned away 62 shots this season for an .816 save percentage.
 
Series History
The River Hawks lead the all-time series against Fairfield, 8-4, although the Stags earned a 3-2 victory in the most recent meeting between the squads last year. Sunday's contest will be the 10th meeting between UMass Lowell and Sacred Heart in the sport of field hockey. The River Hawks head into that contest with a 6-3 edge in the series, including a 2-1 victory in 2017.
 
Senior Success
Torrie Huk hit the ground running for her senior season and already boasts double-digit points just four games in. She is currently ranked third in the nation for goals per game (1.50) and points per game (3.50). Huk, who is the River Hawks' Division I leader for career goals with 33, has moved into a tie for 12th on the program's all-time goals list with none other than Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk (1994-97). And with 74 career points so far, the senior forward needs just two more points to become the team's Division I leader in that category, as well.
 
Exciting Endings
The River Hawks battled to their first overtime victory of the year on Sept. 7, taking down Columbia, 4-3, in the 87th minute. The team has built a strong résumé in extra time, and is now 6-2 in games that have gone to overtime since 2017.
 
National News
The River Hawks are in the national rankings, listed in the top 10 in five categories as a team right now. Individually, Jenna Berger is third in the nation with 1.00 assists per game.
 
Around the League
The River Hawks are currently second in the America East with a 3-1 record in 2018. UMass Lowell is also ranked second in multiple categories, including goals against (5) and assists per game (3.25).
 
Hot Start
UMass Lowell opened 2018 with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2015. In both those games, the River Hawks were the first to score. The team is now 3-0 in 2018 (and 13-4 since 2016) when scoring first.
 
Stonewalling the Opposition
Goalkeeper Eva Berkhout logged her first career shutout in the 2018 opener against Bryant on Aug. 24. She then shut out Hofstra on Aug. 26 to give the team its first back-to-back clean sheets since 2012. This also marked the first time that the team opened the season with a pair of shutouts since the program's Division II National Championship run in 2010.
 
Weekly Awards
Jenna Berger garnered America East Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 11 thanks to her game-tying and game-winning helpers against Columbia.Torrie Huk and Eva Berkhout opened the 2018 season with America East Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods, respectively, on Aug. 28. Huk led the team with eight points (3g, 2a) in two games, while Berkhout made six saves in back-to-back shutouts.

Torrie Huk logged her second-career hat trick and first of the season against Columbia (9.7) … Jenna Berger tallied a personal- and team-best two assists against Columbia (9.7) … Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) registered her first goal of the season vs. No. 8 Louisville (9.1) … Anouk Lalande tallied a hat trick against Hofstra (8.26) … Lindsey Kilpatrick (1g) and Taryn MacKinnon (1a) each posted their first career points against Hofstra … Grace Davis notched the her first collegiate points with a goal and assist against Bryant (8.24) … Jenna Berger recorded her first point on an assist against Bryant.
