SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – For the fourth time this season, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (2-4-3) played into double overtime, this time tying 1-1 against Seton Hall (2-3-2) on Thursday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field.
"I think we did a great job matchup up against a Big East team," said interim head coach
Mira Novak. "I think we did really well coming back and fighting for the goal to get it back and take the game to OT, where we created chances. I'm very pleased with how we're developing."
After a back-and-forth first half, the Pirates came out ahead in the second half with a goal by Cassy Harrigan, who sent a curving shot from the upper left corner of the box in the 53
rd minute off an assist from Lizzy Kirk.
With time running down in the game,
Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia) stepped up for UMass Lowell, scoring her first career goal just a week after returning from the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship. She broke ahead of the pack and sent a long ball over the head of Seton Hall goalkeeper Anna MacLean's head in the 84
th minute. The goal was assisted by
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.), her third assist of the season.
Neither team was able to score again in regulation and the game went into overtime.
The first overtime featured just one shot, by Seton Hall's Cassy Harrigan, who was unable to capitalize. In the second overtime, UMass Lowell generated a pair of shot attempts, but time wound down and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The River Hawks held their opponent scoreless in the first half for the fifth time this season and are now 2-0-3 in those games. UMass Lowell also staved off nine total corner kicks by the Pirates.
The River Hawks remain on the road for the next two games, taking on Brown on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Hartford next Sunday at 1 p.m.
