LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell senior distance runner Paul Hogan (Burlington Mass.) was named the America East Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete.  The conference, Thursday, named a scholar-athlete in each of the six America East sponsored spring sports.

Hogan, a Civil Engineering major, earned the distinction with a 3.60 cumulative grade point average combined with a terrific outdoor season on the track which included a trip to the NCAA Championships.

"Paul is very goal oriented," according to UMass Lowell Track and Field Head Coach Gary Gardner.  "You put a goal in front of him and he'll crush himself to reach that goal and his goals are probably higher than the ones the coaches or his parents have for him.  He's obviously got some talent and works hard on and off the track."

Hogan with a 3.60 cumulative GPA is an honor student and has been a regular on the Dean's List throughout his UMass Lowell career.  He turned in a 3.54 GPA during the spring semester.  Hogan has been a frequent member of various AE All-Academic teams; most recently the XC All-Academic Team in the fall and the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Teams during the winter and spring semesters.  Hogan is minoring in Business.

"Paul has always been a grinder," according to Gardner.  "He has a very high compete level, always pushing himself, whether it's on the track or in the classroom.  He has great self-discipline.  He's in tune with his body,  pays attention to how he feels, and that allows him to run well, stay healthy and drive forward.  Time management is the key and he stays right on schedule."

Hogan had an outstanding outdoor season on the track.  He was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer at the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships after winning both the 5,000 and 10,000-meters.  His 10,000-meter time was an America East Championship record.  Hogan also set the UMass Lowell record in the 5,000-meters with a run of 13-minutes, 56.34-seconds at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific.

Hogan qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 5,000 and the 10,000-meters.
