ALBANY, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team scored six runs in the final two innings to run away with the series finale, knocking off UAlbany, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon.
With two outs in the eighth inning of a 2-2 game,
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) put the River Hawks (20-24, 11-10) up for good with a double to the wall in right field that scored
Ted Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) all the way from first.
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) led the way with two RBI, while
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Leathersich each picked up three hits.
The Great Danes (19-19, 8-10) handed the visitors insurance on a balk following a walk and an error in the ninth, and UMass Lowell continued to add on. Tumosa doubled home
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) to make it a 5-2 advantage.
Olive walked and scored the sixth run on an error, and
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) added a run scoring single. A wild pitch plated
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) for the eighth and final run.
For the second time in the three-game set, the visitors put the first runs on the board, taking advantage of a bases-loaded opportunity in the second frame.
With UAlbany one out away from escaping unscathed, a wild pitch scored Leathersich, whose double began the threat. A walk refilled the bags, and Tumosa drew the third River Hawk walk of the inning to plate Climo.
After going down in order for the first two frames, the Great Danes put runners on base for the next three innings, and capitalized in the fifth. With one out, four straight reached including an RBI single by Patrick Lagravinese to cut the deficit. Marc Wangenstein drew even with a sacrifice fly two batters later.
The River Hawks put a couple of runners in scoring position during the sixth, but could retake the lead.
UMass Lowell has the week off before hosting a non-conference series against Fairfield form May 12-13.
