River Hawks Split Doubleheader on Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. – Behind strong pitching efforts, the UMass Lowell baseball team earned a split of its final doubleheader of the season, edging Stony Brook 2-0 in the second game to set up the rubber game tomorrow morning.

The Seawolves (29-22, 12-11) took the series opener, 3-0, but the River Hawks (23-27, 12-11) were able to return the favor in the nightcap.
Â
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) scored both runs in the victory, and recorded a double as well.
Â
GAME 1
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) struck out seven and did not allow a hit until the eighth, but the hosts could not overcome a trio of late runs in the opening game setback.
Â
After a leadoff walk in the seventh, Stony Brook played small ball with three consecutive sacrifices to plate the game's first run. The Seawolves were able to add insurance with a two-out base hit in the eighth and on a sac fly in the ninth.
Â
Ryan only allowed four base runners in his eight-inning performance, which included a string of 12 straight batters retired.
Â
UMass Lowell had runners get into scoring position in six innings but could break onto the board.

GAME 2
The River Hawks used solo runs in the first and third innings to earn the split in the penultimate regular-season contest and earn the split.

Tumosa and Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) delivered back-to-back hits with one out in the opening frame, as Tumosa doubled and crossed the plate on Olive's single.

In the third, the hosts had runners on second and third following a Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) double, and Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) delivered an infield single to plate Tumosa and double the buffer.

Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) scattered six hits over five innings to pick up the win, and Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) recorded six outs for his fifth save of the season.
