River Hawks Threaten Late, But Fall 4-2 at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass.  – The UMass Lowell baseball team had a chance in the final inning, but Northeastern held on for the 4-2 victory in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

Trailing 4-1 entering the ninth, the River Hawks (18-23) had runners on second and third with no out, but could only plate one on a Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) sacrifice fly. Down to the final out, UMass Lowell the tying run at the plate but could not extend the contest.

Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) brought in the visitors' first run on a single in the eighth to give pick up his 33rd RBI of the season.

The Huskies (27-13) took a 2-0 lead after five innings off a pair of sacrifice flies in the first and fifth frames. The hosts were looking for a big inning in the first, but Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) made a diving catch in the gap to force the sacrifice.

UMass Lowell had at least a runner on base in four of the first five innings, but could not break through onto the scoreboard. In the second, the visitors drew back-to-back walks and had a runner on third in the fifth, but both one-out threats were extinguished.

Northeastern's decisive run came in the sixth on single after a stolen base in the frame, and the hosts added insurance on another base knock in the seventh.

Kendall Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass.) kept the River Hawks in the game after entering the sixth with two on and no outs, retiring the next three batters to keep the deficit at 3-0. Brian Dolan (Lowell, Mass.) pitched a perfect inning of relief, striking out all three batters he faced.

UMass Lowell continues the road swing with an America East series at UAlbany on May 5-6.
