River Hawks Complete Sweep against Binghamton with 6-1 Win

Box Score (PDF)

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Madison Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the UMass Lowell softball team (15-22, 9-2 AE) to a 6-1 victory against Binghamton (11-20, 4-7 AE) on Sunday.

With the victory, the River Hawks swept the three-game series against Binghamton for the first time since moving joining the America East.

"We came out with great energy today," said Head Coach Danielle Henderson. "We are looking to taking advantage of every game and not just be satisfied with winning a series."

Senior Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) also chipped in with three hits and one RBI on the day. Junior Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) matched a season best with nine strikeouts to help strand eight Binghamton runners in the contest.

The River Hawks pressured in their first trip to the plate, as Alcorn led off with a single through the right side to help the team load the bases, although the squad was unable to scratch a run across. The home team did get on the board in the following inning, though, when senior Samantha McQueen (Ewing, N.J.) moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before coming home on a shot up the middle by Alcorn.

The Bearcats made noise in the top of the third, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Talcik fanned the final two batters of the inning to work out of the jam and keep the River Hawks on top, 1-0. Talcik also came up with a big strikeout in the next inning to leave two more Bearcats stranded.

UMass Lowell added a run in the home half of the fourth, loading the bases for sophomore Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.), who drove a RBI single to left field to make the score 2-0. Binghamton cut the difference in half in the fifth, but the River Hawks were quick to retaliate in their next chance at the dish, using three hits to score three insurance runs, including a RBI triple to right by Alcorn. The team then plated one more in the sixth on a base hit by redshirt-sophomore Casey Harding (Cheshire, Conn.) to seal the 6-1 victory.

The River Hawks are set to return to action to host conference foe Maine in the rubber match of that series on Tuesday, April 24 beginning at 3 p.m. That game, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been moved up due to expected inclement weather.
