River Hawks Handed Pair of Setbacks by Boston University

Box Score (PDF): Game 1 | Game 2

LOWELL, Mass. –
Senior Samantha McQueen (Ewing, N.J.) went 3-for-5 (.600) at the plate to pace the UMass Lowell softball team (12-22) in a pair of setbacks against Boston University (27-17) on Tuesday afternoon.

The River Hawks dropped game one, 10-2, in six innings before falling, 10-1, in the nightcap.

"Our performance was lacking today," said Head Coach Danielle Henderson. "I haven't been happy with our enthusiasm and effort in the last four games. I think we're better than what we've shown and I think we will be better in the coming games."

Sophomores Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) and Marianne Sparacia (Spring Hill, Fla.) both batted .500 on the day with one run scored, while freshman Sara Siteman (Hudson, N.H.) hit .400 with a pair of RBI.

The Terriers jumped in front, 3-0, in the first inning of game one with the help of a two-run home run by Alex Heinen. The visitors would then add one to their margin in the second thanks to a sacrifice fly and one more in the third on a first-and-third, stolen base attempt.

Siteman and McQueen logged one hit apiece for the River Hawks in the second and third innings, respectively, however Boston University was able to pull away, 7-0, in the top of the fourth on a two-run single up the middle.

UMass Lowell got on the board in the home half of the fourth when Siteman drove a two-run double to the wall in left to score Sparacia, who had walked, and Cashman, who had reached on a two-bagger of her own. The visitors answered in their next trip to the plate, though, scratching across three more runs to extend the difference to 10-2, earning the decision in six innings.

BU scored in its first trip to the plate in game two, as well, using a triple from Brittany Younan and a RBI single from Emma Wong to take a 1-0 advantage. The squad then rallied for five runs in the third on a pair of triples, a home run and a sacrifice fly.

The River Hawks got one back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single in the gap by Sparacia that allowed McQueen to score, cutting the difference to 6-1. Both sides went three-up and three-down in the fourth and combined for three runners left on in the fifth before the Terriers added two more to their lead in each of the sixth and seventh innings en route to the 10-1 outcome.

The River Hawks will now visit Holy Cross for a single game on Thursday, April 19 beginning at 5 p.m.
