LOWELL, Mass. -- Riding a five-game winning streak, the UMass Lowell baseball team is set for four home games this week, including a midweek matchup against No. 24 UConn. The River Hawks welcome Maine to town over the weekend, as both teams look to remain in the top four of the America East standings.
For the first time at LeLacheur Park, the River Hawks completed a three-game America East sweep, outscoring UMBC 20-3, including 17 runs in the doubleheader. In the twin bill,
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) went 6-8 with five runs and three RBI, while
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) completed the sweep with a 10-strikeout complete game in the finale. The weekend started with
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) and
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) connected on back-to-back home runs.
Leading the Flock
Olive sits atop the lineup with his .383 average, 44 hits, eight home runs, nine doubles and is third with 21 RBI.
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) is batting .304, with eight stolen bases and is second overall 27 RBI. Following his four-RBI weekend,
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) is now back atop the lineup with 29 runs driven in. As a team, UMass Lowell has connected for 21 home runs and 256 hits. On the mound, Luke Tom (Chili, N.J.) is posting a 2.84 ERA, with
Connor Metelski (Wall Township, N.J.) and
Henry Funaro (Lowell, Mass.) pacing the staff with three wins apiece. The top three strikeout leaders are
Andrew Ryan (50),
Jack Riley (49) and
Connor Metelski (37).
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has picked up four saves, with Metelski, Funaro and
David Hoar III (Peabody, Mass.) each having one. The River Hawks are batting .246 as a team, with a 5.22 ERA.
Break Out the Brooms
The sweep of UMBC was only the third clean sheet in a series for the River Hawks since joining the America East, and first in the Mill City. The previous two came at UMBC (2014) and at Hartford (2015).

Ryan and Funaro picked up Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week (4.17) ... Olive earned America East Player of the Week honors (3.13) ... Funaro was named the AE Rookie of the Week (2.20).
Chelmsford Slugger
With his team leading .704 slugging percentage, Olive sits 23rd in the nation. He remains the highest ranked America East player, and second among New England schools. The junior is second in America East in batting average and leads the conference in homers, as well.
One-Two Punch
Entering the week,
Andrew Ryan and
Jack Riley are the top strikeout producers in the America East. Ryan has recorded 50, with Riley right behind him with 49 strikeouts. UMass Lowell holds three of the top-10 spots as well, with
Henry Funaro coming in at ninth (39).
Colby Jack
UMass Lowell has connected on two grand slams over the last two seasons, both coming off the bat of Maiola.
Party of One
Following the River Hawks' 9-0 win against Gardner-Webb on March 13, UMass Lowell played in 10 consecutive one-run games from March 16-31, the longest stretch in the nation this year. The River Hawks are 4-6 in that stretch, and 5-7 in one-run decisions in 2018.
Scouting UConn
The Huskies (19-11-1) enter the matchup with a 4-1-1 mark in their last six contests to enter the Top 25 rankings at number 24. Zac Susi is batting .313 to pace the lineup, while Anthony Prato has recorded 50 base knocks. Isaac Feldstein has connected on 10 home runs and has 29 RBI to provide the offensive spark, but he has also struck out 41 times. The UConn pitching staff is led by Colby Dunlap's 2.03 ERA and Mason Feole's 63 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. The Huskies are batting .274 with a 4.22 team ERA.
UConn leads the all-time series, 5-1, but UMass Lowell took the last meeting, 11-8, in 2017.
Scouting Maine
The Black Bears (10-23, 5-4) sit in second place in the America East but have not played a conference game in two weeks following their bye weekend. Maine split a two-game set at Monmouth last weekend and are 2-4 in the team's last six. At the plate, Danny Casals leads the offense with his .301 average, seven homers with 23 runs driven in. Christopher Bec has taken seven bases in his as attempts, as well. On the mound, Justin Courtney has a 2.57 ERA, while Cody Laweryson has picked up 30 strikeouts. John Arel is a perfect 4-0 on the season in nine appearances. The Black Bears are batting .260 with a .600 ERA.
Maine has won the previous four meetings and leads the series, 11-4.
Home Run Trot
With 21 home runs already in 2018, the River Hawks are on pace to tie their DI high with 37 long balls, set last season. UMass Lowell has only one player reach double-digits since making the jump, as
Steve Passatempo connected on 11 in 2016.
Multitasking
The River Hawks have had 13 players record a total of 61 multi-hit games, as Olive leads the way with 16. The lineup has produced 33 multi-RBI games, with Climo pacing the team with nine.
