LOWELL, Mass. -- For the first in 2018, the UMass Lowell baseball team will take the field at LeLacheur Park as the defending America East Champion, UMBC, comes to the Mill City for a weekend series.
Originally scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, the series got moved up a day due the weather expected on Sunday.
The River Hawks enter the set with a 2-0 mark this week, taking games against Dartmouth and Massachusetts by scores of 12-8 and 4-1, respectively.
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) led the charge with six RBI, including a grand slam against the Big Green.
Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) connected on his first career homer against Dartmouth as well, and
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded four hits.
Leading the Flock
Olive sits atop the lineup with his .387 average, 41 hits, seven home runs, nine doubles and is third with 18 RBI. Maiola is batting .327, with eight stolen bases and has taken over the team lead with 27 RBI.
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) is now second with 25 runs driven in. As a team, UMass Lowell has connected for 19 home runs and 230 hits. On the mound, Luke Tom (Chili, N.J.) is posting a 3.00 ERA and three pitchers have two wins apiece. The top three strikeout leaders are

Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has picked up three saves, with Metelski, Funaro and

Chelmsford Slugger
With his team leading .708 slugging percentage, Olive sits 17th in the nation. He remains the highest ranked America East player, and the leader among New England schools as well. The junior is third in America East in batting average and leads the conference in homers, as well.

UMass Lowell has connected on two grand slams over the last two seasons, both coming off the bat of Maiola.
Party of One
Following the River Hawks' 9-0 win against Gardner-Webb on March 13, UMass Lowell played in 10 consecutive one-run games from March 16-31, the longest stretch in the nation this year. The River Hawks are 4-6 in that stretch, and 5-7 in one-run decisions in 2018.
Scouting UMBC
The Retrievers (10-15, 4-2) are holding onto second place in the America East standings after having a bye week last weekend, and have won their last three contests. A pair of freshman are atop the lineup with batting averages of .440 and .333, respectively, since being put into the lineup. Zach Bright leads the team with 16 RBI, 16 runs and nine doubles, while AJ Wright is even with his 24 hits. Collin Stack has provided the power in the lineup with his three home runs, but has also recorded 25 strikeouts. On the mound, three pitchers have two wins with Stephen Schoch posting a 1.71 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 31.2 innings.
UMBC leads the all-time series, 9-6, including nine of the last 10 meetings.
Home Run Trot
With 19 home runs already in 2018, the River Hawks are on pace to tie their DI high with 37 long balls, set last season. UMass Lowell has only one player reach double-digits since making the jump, as
Steve Passatempo connected on 11 in 2016.
Multitasking
The River Hawks have had 12 players record a total of 56 multi-hit games, as Olive leads the way with 15. The lineup has produced 28 multi-RBI games, with Climo and Maiola pacing the team with seven each.
