WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UMass Lowell baseball went back and forth with Wake Forest, bur the home team took the series finale, 14-7, on Sunday afternoon.
John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) drove in three for the River Hawks (3-7), and
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) added two RBI. The freshman and
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) each crossed the place twice as well.
The Demon Deacons (5-7) scored in each of the first five innings, including a four-run fifth innings to open a 10-5 advantage. Wake added another four in the eighth to seal the victory.
Trailing 1-0 after the first, UMass Lowell had its first three batters reach base behind a
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) walk, a
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) single and a RBI double off the bat of Climo. Castellanos plated the second run with a grounder as the River Hawks took a 2-1 lead.
Wake Forest added two runs in each the second and third frames to enter the fourth with a 5-2 advantage, but a couple of errors by the home side led to three River Hawk runs to tie up the score at 5-5.
After Climo delivered a one-out single, Castellanos reached on the first misplay and the visitors had runners on second and third. With one swing of the bat, Polichetti sent home both runners and reached second on a throwing error, and came to score on
Ben Prada's single. The senior stood on third after a third error and wild pitch, but was stranded.
The hosts retook the lead in the bottom of the frame after loading the bases with no out, but
Connor Metelski (Wall Township, N.J.) was able to limit the damage with a strikeout and Climo completing a double play with a runner thrown out at the plate.
The Demon Deacons used four hits in the fifth for their decisive fifth inning, capped by a two-run double.
UMass Lowell climbed back with 10-7 after Castellanos tripled to score Climo, and Polichetti picked up his final RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Four Wake Forest players had two or more RBI in the contest, and Pat Fricke went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and two runs.
The River Hawks open up spring break at VMI from March 9-11.
