River Hawks Knocked Off, 6-5, in Series Opener at Stony Brook

Story Links

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – With two outs in the ninth inning, Brandon Alamo delivered the walk-off home run as the UMass Lowell baseball team was defeated, 6-5, by Stony Brook in game one of the America East series on Friday afternoon.

The River Hawks (9-13, 2-2) erased a 5-2 deficit in the eighth inning, behind a Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) triple, but the Seawolves (14-9, 3-1) kept their five-game winning streak alive.

Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) each drove in a run as the visitors jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but UMass Lowell fell to 8-6 when scoring first this season.

Olive did not wait long to get going in the series as he sent his seventh home run of the season over the fence in right in the top of the first, for UMass Lowell's 12 run in first innings this season.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the very next inning, sparked by a leadoff single by Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) and a double into the right-center gap off the bat of Castellanos.

The hosts rallied for two in the bottom of the frame to knot the score on three hits, two of which were doubles. The score remained tied until the fourth, when the Seawolves went ahead on an error.

Following two more Stony Brook runs, the River Hawks entered the eighth trailing, 5-2, but would be able to put together a one-out rally to pull even. After Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) was hit, Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Climo stepped to the plate and connected on a blast that rattled around the outfield wall, and after a throwing error Climo was credited with a triple and crossed the plate to draw even.

Stony Brook was able to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) was able to end the threat.

Both teams will head back to Joe Nathan Field tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
