River Hawks face off with UMBC at home on Saturday in AE play

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: UMass Lowell has posted a 4-5 overall record (1-1 AE) after a 13-6 home loss to No. 1 UAlbany in front of a record crowd of 1,751 fans at Cushing Field Complex. The River Hawks have already tied their win total from each of the last two seasons.The River Hawks have scored 10+ goals in five of nine games this season.

Senior attackman Matt Balter (Albany, N.Y.) notched four points and three goals and freshman goalie Hunter Braun (Hartland, Mich.) tied a school record with 21 saves in the loss to No. 1 UAlbany. UMass Lowell scored five goals in the second half to keep the game close, while holding UAlbany to just four second-half goals. Junior midfielder Austin Lane (Aurora, Ont.) also chipped in with two goals in the losing effort. Senior midfielder Sam Klingsporn (Aloha, Ore.) capped off the scoring for the River Hawks late in the fourth quarter for his 12th tally of the season. Junior midfielder Blaine McMahon (New Milford, Conn.) led the way on defense for UMass Lowell with a team-high five ground balls and a game-high five caused turnovers. Braun registered seven fourth-quarter saves in his seventh consecutive start for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell killed off all six of UAlbany's extra man opportunities in the contest.

Balter leads the team with 19 goals on the season, while Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.) is first on the team with 31 points and 20 assists. Senior defender Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) leads the team with 40 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. Austin Lane (Aurora, Ont.) ranks second on the team with 16 goals in nine games

UMass Lowell has a team ranks second among America East teams with 37.9 shots and 24.4 shots on goal so far this season. The River Hawks also rank second in America East with 33.7 ground balls per contest. UMass Lowell's 52.9% EMO conversion rate (9 for 17) in the best of any America East team and rank eighth among NCAA teams.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC enters the weekend with a 2-6 overall mark (0-1 AE) coming off a 9-6 loss at home against Michigan last Saturday. The Retrievers own a 0-4 road record so far this year and have lost four of their last five games coming into the matchup. Steven Zichelli totaled a team-high three goals in the loss to the Wolverines. Billy Nolan leads the team with 16 points and 10 goals in eight games for UMBC so far this season.

BRAUN MAKING THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNITY: Braun ranks second in the NCAA with 13.75 saves per contest. He is one of nine Div. I goalies with 100 or more saves this season. Braun has amassed three 20+ save efforts in seven starts this year and has notched 10+ saves in six games this season.

BALTER ON THE OFFENSIVE: Matt Balter, who has amassed 19 goals this season, is just two goals away from breaking his single-season career record of 20 goals, which he set in his sophomore campaign of 2016. He has posted goals in eight of nine games for the River Hawks, to go along with six multi-goal games to his credit in his senior season. In his UMass Lowell career, Balter has totaled 52 career goals in 46 career games.

AMERICA EAST LEADERS: Sean Tyrrell's 3.44 points per game ranks fifth in America East and his 2.2 assists per game ranks third among America East players. Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) ranks third in AE with 4.6 ground balls per game and 1.6 caused turnovers per contest. Matt Balter's 2.1 goals per game is tied for eighth in the conference. Klingsporn's 7.9 shots per game is fifth in the league and Hunter Braun's 13.75 saves per games leads America East.
