River Hawks On Road At Marist and Stony Brook This Week

LOWELL, Mass. -- Last weekend the UMass Lowell baseball team took two of three from UAlbany in the teams' America East opening series, and this weekend the River Hawks are back in action for a four-game week on the road. The boys in blue head to Marist for a mid-week contest and then travel to Long Island for a series at Stony Brook. 

In a series of pitching duels, the River Hawks took the first game in 11 innings on a walk-off walk, and captured the series with a 1-0 combined shutout in the finale. Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) drew the free pass in game one, and the duo of Connor Metelski (Wall Township, N.J.) and Henry Funaro (Lowell, Mass.) limited the Great Danes to three hits in the series clincher. In the lone loss, Jack Riley (Worcester, Mass.) set a program DI record with 11 strikeouts in the contest. 

Leading the Flock
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) sits atop the lineup with his .380 average, 27 hits, six home runs, and second with 16 RBI and six doubles.. Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) is batting .347, holding team highs with seven doubles and six stolen bases, while Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) is on top with 19 RBI. On the mound, Dan Cunico (Sandyston, N.J.) is posting a 2.70 ERA and is one of two pitchers with two wins on the year, joining Metelski. The top three strikeout leaders are Riley (37), Ryan (33) and Metelski (25). Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has picked up three saves, with Metelski and Funaro each having one. The River Hawks are batting .238 as a team, with a 5.62 ERA.

Chelmsford Slugger
With his team leading .775 slugging percentage, Olive has climbed up the national rankings as he currently sits in 12th. He remains the highest ranked America East player, and  the leader among New England schools as well. The junior is second in America East in batting average and leads the conference in homers, as well. 

Multitasking
The River Hawks have had 12 players record a total of 38 multi-hit games, as Olive leads the way with nine. The lineup has produced 18 multi-RBI games, with Olive, Maiola and Climo pacing the team with four apiece.

Scouting Marist
The Red Foxes (7-11) have won two straight, taking their series against Monmouth heading into Wednesday's matchup. Four batters have averages over .300, with Greg Kocinski's .353 leading the pack. He is also one of three players with a pair of long balls, while Frankie Gregoire has 13 RBI. The pitching staff is lead by Mike Coss' 2.45 ERA and three wins, with Charlie Jerla picking 28 strikeouts. Marist is batting .266 with a 6.14 ERA.

Scouting Stony Brook
The Seawolves (12-9, 2-1) are tied atop the America East standings with the River Hawks and take their three-game winning streak into a contest with LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon. Nick Grande is batting .357 and has scored a team-high 22 runs. Including Grande, four batters have connected on two homers apiece, and Michael Wilson has 22 RBI. The staff is led by Bret Clark's 2.86 ER amd Brian Herrmann's three wins. Greg Marino has 26 strikeouts, as well. Stony Brook has a 5.24 ERA with a .264 batting average.

Series History
The River Hawks have only earned a victory in one of three contests against Marist, and have an 11-12 record against the Seawolves.

Five Spot
In the River Hawks 12-6 win in the season's second game, Cam Climo drove in five RBI. The big hit was a three-run homer in the fifth inning to put UMass Lowell on top, 6-5.
