River Hawks Down Sacred Heart, 18-9, For Second Win of Season

LOWELL, Mass. -- Eight different River Hawks tallied a goal to help lead UMass Lowell (2-4) to its second victory of the season over Sacred Heart (0-7) on Saturday afternoon at Wicked Blue Field. Kristina Keith (East Kingston, N.H.), Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) each tallied four goals apiece to lead the River Hawks in scoring.

"I think we started out a little bit slower than we wanted to," explained Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Carissa Medeiros. "That wasn't on our game plan. Certainly our second half production that took us to the next level of where we wanted to be. I was happy that we made some in-game adjustments. Our offense certainly shined today, which is great. I think our defense has always been kind of the back bone of our program, and for our offense to step up in such a big way was something we were really excited to see."

Keith opened the scoring in the game just over three minutes into the game to give the River Hawks the early lead, before she tallied her second of the game, extending the lead to two with 17:37 remaining in the first.

Sacred Heart got one back just 30 seconds later before tying the contest at two all with 13:16 remaining.

Sokol took a dish from behind the net from Rebecca Idson (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) to give the River Hawks the lead for good less than three minutes later.

Keith recorded her first hat trick of the season with 7:48 remaining in the first, and later netted her fourth goal of the first half less than two minutes later at 6:11 thanks to a nice pass from Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.).

Sacred Heart cut the UMass Lowell lead to just one going into the half, 5-4.

After Sokol opened the second half with a goal, DiModugno scored her first of the game off a pass from Dudley with 26:28 remaining in the second.

The Mill City squad went on a 7-3 run over 10 minutes that saw Idson, Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.), Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) and Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) each score their first goal, while DiModugno and Sokol each recorded their first and third hat trick of season, respectively, to extend the River Hawk lead to 14-8.

Dudley scored a man-up goal 11:50 remaining in the game to make it a 15-8 contest. The goal broke the old program record of goals in a game at 14 set in last season's 14-8 win over Vermont (4.23.17).

A 3-1 run by UMass Lowell made it an 18-9 game with just under two minutes to go and would hold for the final tally of the game.

The nine goal margin of victory for the River Hawks is the largest in the program's history, eclipsing the previous record of seven in UMass Lowell's 13-6 win over Army West Point (3.8.17).

The squad returns to action on Wednesday, March 21 when they travel to take on the Bryant Bulldogs for a 7 p.m. opening draw.
