Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) batted .571 (4-7) with three RBI in a 1-1 day for the UMass Lowell softball team (4-14), as the squad closed out its weekend at the Fordham Tournament.
Â
The River Hawks first defeated Holy Cross, 6-0, for their second straight win and first shutout of the season before facing an 8-5 setback against Detroit Mercy.
Â
"We were very good at the plate in both games," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "We needed to clean up our defense in the second game."
Â
Cashman slugged 1.000 with three runs scored. Sophomore
Marianne Sparacia (Spring Hill, Fla.) and freshman
Sara Siteman (Hudson, N.H.) each went 3-for-6 at the plate to add to the offense. Siteman also totaled three RBI, while Sparacia tallied a team-high four runs scored. Senior
Samantha McQueen (Ewing, N.J.) chipped in with three hits of her own.
Â
Cashman put the River Hawks on the board in the first inning of game one against Holy Cross thanks to a two-run home run over the wall in right center. Both sides went three-up and three-down in the second, but UMass Lowell extended its margin to 5-0 in the third with the help of a hard-hit ball down the left field line by Siteman.
Â
The team's final run of the contest came in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Sparacia.
Â
Freshman pitcher
Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) allowed just one hit in the 6-0 contest with a personal-best eight strikeouts en route to her first career complete-game shutout.
Â
In the final game of the weekend against Detroit Mercy, the River Hawks once again scored the first run of the day with a RBI two-bagger by Siteman in the first. However, the Titans rallied for six runs on four hits in the second to pull ahead.
Â
UMass Lowell chipped away with one run in each of the next two innings, as freshman
Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) put a ball in play that plated Cashman in the third and Sparacia scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, making the score 6-3.
Â
The Titans took an 8-3 advantage in the top of the sixth with a two-run double to right center, but Cashman and Siteman each tallied a RBI in the home half of the sixth to cut the difference to 8-5. Both teams would leave one on in the seventh, as Detroit took the decision. Â
