LOWELL, Mass. -- Fresh off a 2-1 weekend against the VMI Keydets, the UMass Lowell baseball team continues its spring break with four games spanning two states, as the River Hawks take on Gardner-Webb in North Carolina and head back to Virginia for a weekend series at James Madison.

Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the charge at VMI, as he belted four home runs, drove in eight RBI, recorded seven hits and scored five times as well. Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) added his first two homers of the year, and Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) went deep as well. On the mound, Jack Riley (Worcester, Mass.) and Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) earned their first wins of 2018. 

Leading the Flock
After his weekend, Olive sits atop the lineup with his .354 average, 17 hits, five home runs and is tied for the team lead with 12 RBI. Maiola is batting .302 with four doubles and four stolen bases, while Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) is even with Olive's 12 RBI. On the mound, Cunico is posting a 3.38 ERA and is one of five pitchers with a win on the year. The top three strikeout leaders are Riley (20). Ryan (19) and Henry Funaro (19). Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has picked up two saves, with Metelski adding a third. The River Hawks are batting .238 as a team, with a 7.41 ERA.

Chelmsford Slugger
With his team leading .729 slugging percentage, Olive ranks in the top 50 nationally, sitting in a tie for 48th. He is the highest ranked America East player, and only trails Boston College's Chris Galland for the top spot from a New England school. 

Multitasking
The River Hawks have had nine players record a total of 25 multi-hit games, as Olive leads the way with six. The lineup has produced 11 multi-RBI games, with Olive's three pacing the team.

Scouting Gardner-Webb
The Bulldogs (10-6) have lost three straight and five out of their last six after starting out 9-1. Corey Howard is batting .373 with 22 hits, while Chandler Redmond has hit five home runs and driven in 17 runs. The trio of Chris Clary, Mason Fox and Mickey Dugan have combined for 16 of Gardner-Webb's 17 stolen bases. The pitching staff has four players with two wins apiece, and a pair with a 2.25 ERA. Bradley Hallman has struck out 23 batters in 25.2 innings. The Bulldogs are batting .288 with a 3.55 ERA.

Scouting James Madison
The Dukes (10-6) had their three-game winning streak snapped with a loss against St. Bonaventure on March 11. The streak included a 21-2 win against the Tennessee Volunteers, as well. Josh Jones' .348 average paces the offense to lead a trio of batters with over a .321 average. Fox Semones has 12 RBI and Harry Brown has connected on four home runs. JMU's staff has four players who haven't allowed an earned run. Dan Goggin has three wins while Colton Harlow and Kevin Kelly each have 16 strikeouts. The Dukes are batting .265 and the staff is posting a 3.56 ERA.

In the River Hawks 12-6 win in the season's second game, Cam Climo drove in five RBI. The big hit was a three-run homer in the fifth inning to put UMass Lowell on top, 6-5.
