LOWELL, Mass. – Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, but the UMass Lowell women's basketball team dropped its regular-season finale, 61-39, to UMBC on Sunday afternoon.
Shackelford paced the River Hawks (4-25, 1-15) on the day, while the Retrievers (4-25, 3-13) had two players reach double digits in Laura Castaldo (13) and Brittani Burgess (12). Lakiah Sims grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the visitors.
Jennifer Louro (Belmar, N.J.) started off the game with a three-pointer, but the visitors responded with a 7-0 run and built an 11-5 lead with over four minutes to play in the first. UMBC tacked on the next six points as well and held a 17-5 advantage, before Gibbs' first bucket of the night.
The Retrievers led 21-9 after the opening 10 minutes, but UMass Lowell was able to cut the deficit to 25-14 in the opening minutes. UMBC opened its lead back up to 32-14 and took a 38-16 advantage into the intermission.
Trailing 45-16 with 7:42 to play in the third, the River Hawks scored eight straight in a two-minute span, led by six from
Brianna Rudolph (Lynn, Mass.).
The River Hawks head down to Baltimore for their first appearance in the America East Tournament, as they meet with UMBC in the first round.
