LOWELLÂ Mass. - The UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated by No. 8 Providence College, 3-1 on Saturday night in Hockey East play in front of 5,566 fans at the Tsongas Center.Â
UMass Lowell drops to 16-16-0 overall (10-12-0 HEA) with the loss, while the Friars up their record 20-9-4 overall (13-6-4 HEA) with the victory.
Senior defenseman
Chris Forney (Thief River Falls, Minn.) tied the game for the River Hawks with 2:43 to play in regulation for his sixth goal of the year, but Providence's Erik Foley answered right back with his 15th of the year just 42 seconds later to help PC regain the lead at 2-1. Josh Wilkins sealed the win for Providence with a empty netter with 51 seconds left for the Friars.Â
Kasper Bjorkqvist opened the scoring in the game just 5:20 into the second period for his 13th tally of the season.
Sophomore goaltender
Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) made 28 saves in his 11th start of the season for the River Hawks, which included 17 second-period saves. PC's Hayden Hawkey stopped 26 shots in his 20th victory of the year.
UMass Lowell was a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill on the night. The River Hawks outshot Providence, 14-8 in the third period.Â
The River Hawks return to action on Friday, February 23rd at Merrimack. Game time from Lawler Arena is 7 p.m., the game will be televised regionally on NESN.
