River Hawks fall at No. 8 Providence, 5-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated at No. 8 Providence College, 5-2 in Hockey East play on Friday night at Schneider Arena.

The River Hawks drop to 16-15-0 overall (10-11-0 HEA) with the loss, while the Friars improve to 19-9-4 overall (12-6-4 HEA) with the victory.

Josh Wilkins added his 12th goal of the year to make it 4-2 Friars with 9:31 to play and Vimal Sukumaran added a power play tally with 2:15 left to seal the win for the Friars.

The Friars came storming back after the Lohin goal with two goals just 50 seconds apart, as Spenser Young and Brian Pinho gave Providence a 3-2 lead with 10:39 to play in the third period.

Sophomore forward Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) gave the River Hawks a 2-1 lead with 13:28 to go in the third period for his ninth goal of the season. A stretched out Lohin poked the puck through Hayden Hawkey's legs off a nice pass from Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.) from the left half wall.

UMass Lowell's Tommy Panico (Wall, N.J.) tallied his seventh marker of the season to even the game at 1-1 with 3:28 to play in the middle frame. PC's Erik Foley opened the scoring in the game just 3:59 into the second period for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.

The team skated to a scoreless opening period of play with UMass Lowell holding a slight, 7-6 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes.

Junior goaltender Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) totaled 23 saves in the loss for UMass Lowell, which included 10 third-period stops. Hawkey managed 24 stops with 15 saves in the third for his 19th win of the season for the Friars.

Junior forward Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) won a team-high 11 face-offs for UMass Lowell, which included all four face-offs in the opening frame.

The River Hawks return to action in the series finale against Providence on Saturday, February 17th. Game time from the Tsongas Center on Star Wars Night is 7 p.m. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.com and the Watch ESPN mobile app.
