<strong>CHARLESTON, S.C. –</strong> The UMass Lowell baseball team split its season opening twin bill at the Shipyard Classic, falling to Ball State 8-5, before thumping Morehead State, 12-6, in game two.<br />

Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) led the River Hawk (1-1) offense with seven RBi, while
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded four hits and scored four times.<br />
<br />
After an 8-5 setback in game one, UMass Lowell saw Morehead State open the scoring with a four-run third on three hits and two errors. The River Hawks answered with three in their at bats, as
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) connected on his first home run of the season to make it a 4-2 ballgame. After a walk and single, Climo picked up his third RBI of the day with a single down the right field line.<br />

The Eagles extended their lead to 5-3 in the fifth, but Climo continued his torrid start with a three-rum shot into the river in left field to give UMass Lowell its first lead of the contest at 6-5.<br />
<br />
Morehead came back with a run in the sixth, but the River Hawks took control of the contest in the seventh with four of their own.
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass) singled home
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) to regain the lead at 7-6. Back-to-back singles from Passatempo and Olive scored a pair of runs, and Climo picked up his fifth RBI of the game with a bases-loaded walk.<br />

In game one, the River Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run third inning, which started with a
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) single and
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) got hit for the second consecutive at bat.<br />
<br />
With two outs in the frame, Olive doubled home Prada, and Climo singled to left to send Maiola and Olive across the plate for the advantage.<br />
<br />
The Cardinals knotted the score with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth, as Seth Freed connected on a three-run home run with one out in the inning. They took their first lead of the day in the sixth on a bunt.<br />
<br />
UMass Lowell had opportunities to tie the game with the bases loaded in the sixth with two outs, but could not deliver the tying run.<br />
<br />
Olive put the River Hawks on top, 5-4, with his first homer of the season in the seventh after Passatempo led off with a single.<br />
<br />
Colin Brouckhouse put the Cardinals up 7-5 in the eighth with their second three-run homer of the contest.<br />
<br />
UMass Lowell will play Morehead State tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m, before the final game against Ball State at 5 p.m.<br />
