River Hawks downed by Boston University, 5-2 in series finale

Charlie Levesque and Mattias Goransson scored goals in the loss for the River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Hockey team fell to Boston University, 5-2 on Saturday night in the Hockey East series finale at the Tsongas Center in front of 4,460 fans.

The River Hawks fall to 8-7-1 overall (4-4-1 HEA) with the loss, while BU improves to 5-8-2 overall and 5-5-2 in league play.

"It was a humbling defeat, I thought we didn't have the start we were looking for certainly," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "You get in that big of a hole and it's tough to climb out of, at the same time I thought there was some good things. We climbed back and made it a one-goal game and I thought Levesque's chance in the third period would have broke it the other way."

Patrick Curry scored on the power play and Shane Bowers added his second goal of the night in the third period to seal the victory for the Terriers.

Junior alternate captain Mattias Goransson (Slottsbron, Sweden) cut the BU lead to 3-2 with a slapshot from the left point that beat BU goalie Jake Oettinger glove side at 10:42 of the second period.

Sophomore forward Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.) scored his second goal in as many nights for the River Hawks with a nifty backhander to cut the BU lead to 3-1 with six minutes to go in the first stanza.

Shane Bowers extended the Boston University lead to 2-0 just three minutes later and the Terriers made it 3-0 less than a minute later on a shorthanded tally by Bobo Carpenter for his second goal of the period.

Carpenter scored for the Terriers to open the scoring in the game at 10:03 of the opening frame.

Junior goalie Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) made seven stops for the River Hawks playing in the first 14:02 of the game, while senior netminder Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) made 14 saves in the final 45:58 in relief of Wall. Oettinger amassed 40 saves in the victory for the Terriers.

UMass Lowell outshot BU, 42-26 for the game, including a 14-5 edge in the second and a 15-9 advantage in the third frame.

The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 29th for a non-league game against NCHC foe Denver. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7 p.m.
