SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) led a trio of players in double-figures, but the UMass Lowell women's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup, 90-57, at Seton Hall on Tuesday night.
Shackelford scored 13 on then night, including nine in the second half, to pace the River Hawks (2-4). Rudolph's 12 points marked the third consecutive game and fifth time this season that she has reached double-figures as she led connected on two three-pointers, as well.
Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Indiana) rounded out the group by chipping in 11 points.
Ren'Cia Rolling (Lansing, Ill.) dished out seven assists for the visitors, the fifth game she surpassed five helpers.
"That was a different beast than we have seen all year, athletically and physically," commented Head Coach
Tom Garrick. "They are a really fast team who is able to push the ball on the break very well, but I'm very happy in the way that our kids showed resiliency and outscored Seton Hall in the fourth quarter. We played much better in the second half after adjusting to the style of play, and I thought we competed which is the most important thing going forward."
The game began with a 10-4 run for Pirates (6-0), with buckets from
Linda Svenne (Riga, Latvia) and Bri Stiers (Denver, Colorado.) The hosts shot 6-of-9 from three-point range in the first quarter, including a buzzer beater to take a 30-10 lead after one.
A 5-0 UMass Lowell run in the second period sparked a stretch where the visitors traded baskets with the Pirates.
Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Rolling picked up their first points of night to provide the spurt.
Rudolph hit a pair of consecutive triples and
Katie McKie (Austin, Texas) hit two free throws in the final two minutes of the half to cap off a an even final six minutes of play in the half.
Shackelford and Smith reached double digits in the final period, while Rudolph went 4-of-4 from the line in the final minute of the third to cap off her scoring effort.
Seton Hall had four players score more than 10 points, led by 18 each from Kaela Hilaire and Victoria Cardaci, who connected on six three-pointers. Hilaire led all players with nine assists, as well.
The River Hawks head east for Thursday's matchup against the Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
