LOWELL, Mass. – Ren'Cia Rolling (Lansing, Ill.) came within one rebound of a triple-double as the UMass Lowell women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season with a 79-45 victory against Fisher College on Tuesday night.
The win gave the River Hawks (2-1) their first winning record since 2014 and first back-to-back victories since the 2015-16 season.
"It was an underwhelming victory for us, with the discrepancies in size and talent that we think we have, it should have been a more commanding victory in our eyes, commented Head Coach Tom Garrick. "I didn't think we were disciplined in our execution or effort, but that's always something we can work on. I'm glad we won, but we're looking to have higher expectation of ourselves throughout each game, and taking nothing away from Fisher College who came in here and played really hard and were hard to guard at points."
Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) and Katie McKie (Austin, Texas) set new personal bests with 13 points each. Rolling (10 pts, nine rebounds, 10 assists) set a new Division I program best with double digit helpers, and is the first UMass Lowell player to have 10 or more assists in a game since 2012.
Vivian Lara led all scorers with 21 points for Fisher, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
The River Hawks (2-1) scored the first four points and led 6-5 before two three-pointers from Linda Svenne (Riga, Lativa) pushed the lead to 12-5 with under five to play in the first.
A 6-2 run by the hosts closed out the quarter, including a triple from Idom as UMass Lowell led 18-7 after one.
The first five minutes of the second quarter saw the River Hawks open up a 28-7 advantage with 10 straight points. Fisher responded to climb within 33-15, but the hosts held a 41-20 lead at the half.
With a 10-2 run over a 3:11 span in the third, the Falcons closed the gap to 54-39 but a four-point play by Idom saw the River Hawks bump the buffer to 61-39 entering the final period.
The River Hawks head out on the road for the first time in 2018-19, embarking on a five-game road swing with a matchup with Cornell on November 17 at 12 p.m.
