River Hawks Defeat Colgate, 5-2, in Sunday Matinee

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) scored two goals inside the final four minutes of action to help seal a 5-2, non-conference victory for the UMass Lowell field hockey team (7-5) at Colgate (2-11) on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a gritty battle for 70 minutes, and we showed a lot of poise and character throughout the game," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "It was a good, hard-fought win."

The performance marked Lalande's team-best fifth, multiple-goal game this season. Sophomore Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) added one goal and one assist for three points, while senior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) and freshman Grace Davis (Waterloo, Ontario) chipped in with one goal apiece. Senior Carleen O'Connell (Madison, N.J.) logged a career-high two assists on the day, as well.

The River Hawks took a 4-1 shot advantage in the first 15 minutes of play, although the Raiders would tally the first goal of the game in the 17th minute off the stick of Nora Mulroy.

UMass Lowell retaliated, though, scoring back-to-back goals just a minute apart to pull ahead, 2-1. Davis first tied it up at 1-1, tipping in a pass from Lynes in the 24th minute before Huk capitalized on a defensive turnover in the circle and beat the opposing keeper with a reverse-stick chip shot to give her squad the upper hand for the remainder of the period.

Lynes converted on the River Hawks' first corner after halftime, dribbling from the top of the circle through the defense and putting a shot on target to extend the visitors margin to 3-1. However, Colgate cut the difference back to just one in the 44th on a corner chance of its own.

The River Hawks limited the Raiders to just four more shots in the game, while O'Connell connected with Lalande twice in the final minutes of action to put the game out of reach at 5-2.

UMass Lowell now owns a 2-1 edge in the all-time series against Colgate. The River Hawks will wrap up their three-game road swing at America East foe Maine on Friday, October 12 beginning at 3 p.m.
