LOWELL, Mass. – Despite putting up 22 shots, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (3-6-4, 1-1-1 AE) played New Hampshire (5-5-2, 1-1-1 AE) to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Thursday evening at Cushing Field.
"It was a tough game," said interim head coach
Mira Novak. "They were the number one team in the conference last year, and they got voted number one [in the America East preseason poll] …That being said, I think the performance from our team – they left everything out there."
The first half featured solid defense from both sides – UNH attempted three shots on goal, while holding UMass Lowell to none.
The River Hawks picked up the offensive pace in the second half and overtime periods, tallying seven shots on goal, led by
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) with three.
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) chipped in with two of her own, while
Katelyn Vieira (Warwich, R.I.) and
Kristina Bartsch (Cologne, Germany) each had one.
Although Morrier had a few chances in the overtime periods, the team wasn't able to capitalize, and the River Hawks clocked their fourth tie of the year. Six different River Hawks played all 110 minutes of the game, and the team is now averaging 97.3 minutes per game this season.
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied six saves, as well as her third shutout of the season, with the help of UMass Lowell's strong defensive unit.
Up next, the River Hawks head to Binghamton for a Sunday afternoon matchup.
