LOWELL, Mass. – In its last regular-season game, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (6-8-4, 4-3-1 AE) was taken down by Stony Brook (11-6-1, 6-1-1 AE) on Sunday evening at Cushing Field in a 1-0 overtime decision.
"We knew that we were playing a good team trying to win the conference tonight, so it was a tough game, obviously," interim head coach
Mira Novak said. "I think we created enough chances to come out at the better end of it, but it goes into overtime, one mistake, lost game, but again, I don't think I can blame them for their effort, for the willingness to go and execute the plan."
The River Hawks outshot the Seawolves 9-7 in the first half, with four shots by
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.). Overall, UMass Lowell attempted 11 shots on goal to Stony Brook's nine.
Both teams played with grit through regulation, but unlike Thursday's victory at Vermont, the River Hawks were unable to tally a late-game goal, and the team went into its seventh overtime game of the season.
Stony Brook scored the game winner in the 95
th minute, with a tally by Julia Johnstonbaugh, who took on
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) one-on-one and sent the ball into the lower corner of the net.
After averaging nearly two goals per game all season, the Seawolves were held to just one goal by the River Hawks. Schneider made eight saves as UMass Lowell held its opponent to less than two goals for the 11
th time this season.
With the loss, the River Hawks have earned a four seed in the America East tournament and welcome Vermont to Cushing Field on Thursday at 7 p.m. for the quarterfinal round.
