River Hawks Trek to New Hampshire, Welcome Dartmouth This Week

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell field hockey team is set for another two-game week, as the squad first heads to America East rival New Hampshire for a 3 p.m. tilt on Friday, October 19 before welcoming Dartmouth to Wicked Blue for a non-conference matchup on Sunday, October 21 at 1:30 p.m.
 
Baystate Marathon
The Baystate Marathon will take place in Lowell on Sunday, forcing some road closures. Please check out the course map here and find an alternate route to Wicked Blue Field if necessary. Be sure to leave extra time for travel.
 
River Hawk Rewind
UMass Lowell faced a pair of setbacks last week to move to 7-7 overall on the year and 1-5 in America East action. The squad was handed a 4-1 decision at No. 17 Maine on Oct. 12 before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker in double overtime against Vermont on Oct. 14.
 
Leading the Flock
Through 14 games, junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) paces the River Hawks with 12 goals and 25 points. Senior Torrie Huk (Mildford, Del.) adds to the offensive effort with 24 points. Freshman Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) leads the team with seven assists. Junior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) owns the 7-7 record in the cage, totaling 65 saves and a .730 save percentage.
 
Scouting New Hampshire
The Wildcats, who are in the midst of a four-game skid, are 3-10 so far this season, including a 1-4 mark in America East games. Last week, UNH fell, 4-0, at No. 17 Maine on Oct. 14. Finn Caron and Bailey Fanikos lead the team with four goals and eight total points each. Rachle Bossi and Katie Audino have tallied a team-best three helpers each. In the cage, Kelsey Rudert has made 52 saves for a .650 save percentage.
 
Scouting Dartmouth
The Big Green is 4-8 so far in 2018, although the team will visit Columbia on Oct. 19 before coming to UMass Lowell on Oct. 21. Dartmouth went 0-2 last week, falling, 5-1, against Northeastern on Oct. 14 and 4-3 against Yale on Oct. 13. Katie Spanos is first on the squad with six goals and 13 total points, while Lia Constantine boasts a team-best four assists. Hailey Valerio, who has started all 12 games, has made 90 stops and has a .698 save percentage.
 
Series History
Friday's contest will mark the 10th meeting ever between UMass Lowell and New Hampshire in the sport of field hockey. The Wildcats own a 7-2 edge in the all-time series, but the River Hawks earned a 3-1 victory when they met earlier this season. Dartmouth is 7-2 all-time against UMass Lowell, as well, although the River Hawks picked up a 3-2 overtime decision when the teams met back in 2015.
 
Setting a Standard
Anouk Lalande and Torrie Huk are setting a new scoring standard for the River Hawks at the Division I level, taking the top two spots on the team's DI record list for career points with 87 and 84, respectively. Additionally, they are tied for eighth on the program's all-time career goals list with 37.
 
Spreading the Love
Including the River Hawks 5-2 win at Colgate on Oct. 7, five of the team's seven wins so far have featured at least three different goal scorers.
 
Exciting Endings
The River Hawks battled to their first overtime victory of the year on Sept. 7, taking down Columbia, 4-3, in the 87th minute. Despite the 2-1 loss to Vermont on Oct. 14, the team has built a strong résumé in extra time, and is now 6-3 in games that have gone to overtime since 2017.
 
National News
Anouk Lalande is currently ranked 14th in the nation with 0.86 goals per game, while Torrie Huk is 23rd with 1.85 points per game. As a team, the River Hawks are 20th in the nation with a .747 save percentage.
 
Hot Start
UMass Lowell opened 2018 with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2015. In both those games, the River Hawks were the first to score. The team is now 6-1 in 2018 (and 16-5 since 2016) when scoring first.
 
Stonewalling the Opposition
Goalkeeper Eva Berkhout logged her first career shutout in the 2018 opener against Bryant on Aug. 24. She then shut out Hofstra on Aug. 26 to give the team its first back-to-back clean sheets since 2012. This also marked the first time that the team opened the season with a pair of shutouts since the program's Division II National Championship run in 2010.
 
Weekly Awards
Jenna Berger garnered America East Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 11 thanks to her game-tying and game-winning helpers against Columbia. Torrie Huk and Eva Berkhout opened the 2018 season with America East Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods, respectively, on Aug. 28. Huk led the team with eight points (3g, 2a) in two games, while Berkhout made six saves in back-to-back shutouts.
 
Notables
Senior Carleen O'Connell (Madison, N.J.) logged a career-high two assists at Colgate (10.7) … Jenna Berger scored her first career goal against Quinnipiac (9.23) … freshman Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.) registered her first career saves (2) at Sacred Heart (9.16) … Torrie Huk logged her second-career hat trick and first of the season against Columbia (9.7) … Jenna Berger tallied a personal- and team-best two assists against Columbia (9.7) … Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) registered her first goal of the season vs. No. 8 Louisville (9.1) … Anouk Lalande tallied a hat trick against Hofstra (8.26) … Lindsey Kilpatrick (1g) and Taryn MacKinnon (1a) each posted their first career points against Hofstra … Grace Davis notched the her first collegiate points with a goal and assist against Bryant (8.24) … Jenna Berger recorded her first point on an assist against Bryant.
