LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (4-7-4, 2-2-1 AE) played through drizzly conditions on Thursday evening at Cushing Field, falling 1-0 to Maine (6-7-1, 2-4-0 AE) on Pink Night.
"After the big win on Sunday, we just entered the game with a lack of energy," said interim head coach
Mira Novak. "We knew that Maine would be defensively organized…Against a team like that, it's hard to score against them when they're so organized, and it takes some effort to break them down. Unfortunately, we were not able to do that today."
In a back-and-forth first half, the Black Bears notched the first goal, with a tally from Mikayla Morin in the 34
th minute. She connected from right in front of the net after a corner by Emilie Andersen, and Maine went into halftime up 1-0.
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) had a few chances in the second half, including a pair of free kicks, but the Black Bears held on for the victory.
The teams were tied in shots (9), while UMass Lowell held a slight edge in shots on goal (5 to 4).
Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) made her fourth appearance of the season, with three saves.
The River Hawks look to bounce back as they travel to Maryland to face UMBC on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
