LOWELL, Mass. – Junior goaltender
Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) recorded 21 saves in his third career shutout to lead the UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 4-0 win against Vermont on Friday night at the Tsongas Center in Hockey East play in front of 5,389 fans.
The River Hawks improve to 11-9-0 overall (7-6-0 HEA) with the victory, while the Catamounts drop to 4-13-3 overall (1-7-2 HEA) with the loss. With the win, River Hawks' Head Coach
Norm Bazin earned his 200
th career coaching victory.
Junior forward
Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) totaled a game-high three points, all by way of assists.
Senior alternate captain
Chris Forney (Thief River Falls, Minn.) added a third-period goal for his fourth goal of the season to seal the win for the River Hawks.
Freshman forward
Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) gave the River Hawks a 4-0 lead on Vermont just one minute into the second period for his second career goal with UMass Lowell.
Connor Wilson's (Calgary, Alta.) fifth tally of the season extended the River Hawks lead to 5-0 on the power play with 10:07 left in the second period.
UMass Lowell struck first in the contest on junior defenseman
Niklas Folin's (Kungsbacka, Sweden) first collegiate goal on a wrister from the right point to give the River Hawks a 1-0 advantage at 9:08 the opening frame. Folin's first career goal came in his 58
th career game with the River Hawks.
Freshman forward
Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ontario) extended the River Hawks' lead to 2-0 with his third career tally a little over a minute later. Â Senior forward
John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) scored his seventh of the season to make it a 3-0 game in favor of the River Hawks with 2:22 left in the first frame. The River Hawks outshot Vermont, 8-5 in the first period.
Hernberg notched 10 second-period saves in his 11
th win of the season, while his counterpart Stefanos Lekkas totaled seven saves for loss UVM in 29:53 of play, as he took the loss. Tyler Harmon played the final 30:07 and made 11 saves for Vermont.
Junior forward
Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) won all five face offs he took in the first stanza, he finished with a team-high nine faceoff wins.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 6
