River Hawks Fall on Field Trip Day, 69-51, to Maine

LOWELL, Mass. – Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) scored 15 points to move in the top-10 in program history, but the UMass Lowell women's basketball suffered a, 69-51, loss to Maine, during the programs' fourth annual Health & Fitness Field Trip Day on Wednesday morning.
Gibbs entered the contest with 1,096 points and is now in ninth all-time with 1,111 career points. She gained sole possession of 10th in the second quarter, and rattled off six straight in the third to take over ninth, as she led the River Hawks (3-19, 0-9).
The Black Bears' (14-8, 7-2) Blanca Milan knocked down a game-high 22 points, as the duo of Parise Rossignol and Dor Saar each added 11 points.
Both teams combined for a trio of three-pointers in the early minutes, as Maine held a 6-3 lead, after Brianna Rudolph (Lynn, Mass.) connected on her fifth straight triple dating back to last contest with 7:45 left in the first.
Trailing 14-5 with two minutes to play in the opening quarter, the hosts rattled off six of the next nine points, including a Paula Lopez (Leon, Spain) floater at the buzzer to trim the deficit to 17-11.
UMass Lowell continued its 10-3 run with four straight points from Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) and Katie McKie (Austin, Texas) to open the second. Lopez knotted the score up at 17-17 after the media timeout to cap off the 12-3 spurt.
The Black Bears closed out of the half on a 27-9 run, including 12 straight points, to take a 39-26 lead at the break.
Behind six straight points by Gibbs in the third, the River Hawks cut the deficit to 48-34 with 5:40 to play in the frame. Late in the third, Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) and Lopez combined for six straight to bring UMass Lowell within 53-43.
The River Hawks open February on the road at UAlbany with a 7 p.m. tip on the 5th.
