STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team saw yet another halftime lead slip away as the Stony Brook Seawolves pulled away in the fourth for their 59-50 win on Wednesday night.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) was the only River Hawk (3-17, 0-7) in double-figures with 17 points, while the Seawolves (11-9, 3-4) had a trio, led by Jerell Matthews' 17. Cheyenne Clark picked up a double-double for the hosts with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
Following four straight points for the River Hawks to take a 6-3 lead, Stony Brook went on a 5-1 run to go back on top, 8-7, halfway through the opening period. UMass Lowell outscored the hosts 6-2 to finish the quarter, including a
Paula Lopez (Leon, Spain) buzzer beater after a steal under Stony Brook's basket.
The River Hawks continued the run and built a 15-10 lead early in the second, but the Seawolves went on an 8-2 spurt of their own and took an 18-17 lead with 4:33 left in the half.
UMass Lowell responded and scored the next five points, capped off by a Lopez three, to hold a 22-17 advantage. For the third time in the last four games, the River Hawks led at the half, as both teams headed into the break with the visitors up 23-18.
In the opening minutes of the second half, each attack from Stony Brook was countered by UMass Lowell, and a
Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) triple made it 30-24 with 5:26 on the clock.
The Seawolves erased their halftime deficit with a 11-4 run and took a 35-34 advantage into the final quarter. Both teams traded baskets in the fourth, with Gibbs reaching double digits following her and-one to knot the game at 40-40.
Stony Brook took control and scored 10 of the next 13 points to build a 50-43 lead with 3:22 to play.
The River Hawks play their final road game of the month on January 27 at Hartford. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
