BOSTON, Mass. – UMass Lowell Associate Athletic Director for Communications
Pete Souris has been named the 2017 Joe Concannon Hockey East Media Award recipient, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
This prestigious honor is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding body of work in covering and promoting the interests of the Hockey East Association. The award is named in memory of beloved Boston Globe sportswriter Joe Concannon.
"An award given in Joe Concannon's name is significant, so we congratulate Pete on being the first SID so honored," said UMass Lowell Director of Athletics
Dana Skinner. "His body of work on behalf of Hockey East is impressive and deserving of recognition."
Souris is in his 18th year working in conjunction with Hockey East, including four at UMass Lowell.
"It is a tremendous honor to receive this award named after Joe Concannon," said Souris. "It's amazing to be included among all of the talented media members that have been bestowed the honor previously. It has been a privilege to work in this first-class league for the last 17 years and I look forward to continuing to promote the sport of college hockey through my work at UMass Lowell."
Prior to joining the staff at UMass Lowell, Souris spent over six years at Hockey East as assistant commissioner for public relations where he supported 11-member institutions in a media relations capacity, served as the media coordinator for six Hockey East Championships at the TD Garden and was the media coordinator for two sold out Frozen Fenway events at Fenway Park in 2010 and 2012. In addition, he was charged with creating a digital media plan for the conference's website and social media channels, as well as serving as the liaison for the league's three national and regional television partners.
He previously spent six years working in the athletic media relations department at the University of New Hampshire, serving as the primary contact for men's ice hockey. Additionally, he served as the media coordinator for the 2004 and 2007 NCAA hockey regionals in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Souris has worked the last 18 Frozen Fours in a media relations capacity, dating back to 2000 in Providence, R.I., which included two appearances with the Wildcats in 2002 and 2003, and in a consulting role with the River Hawks in 2013.
Typically bestowed upon a member of the media, Souris becomes the first sports information director to ever receive the award. He is the second member of the UMass Lowell staff to receive the recognition, as
Bob Ellis, coordinator of photography/website content and hockey play-by-play broadcaster was honored in 2009.
