River Hawks tripped up in AE Opener against New Hampshire, 3-2

Madi Bell and Katherine Claybaugh each tallied 15 kills in the losing effort for the River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. --
The UMass Lowell Volleyball team fell to New Hampshire in five sets in the America East opener on Friday night at Costello Athletic Center. The set scores were 25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 10-15. 

With the loss, the River Hawks drop to 3-9 overall (0-1 AE), while UNH improves to 6-9 overall (1-0 AE). 

Sophomores Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) each amassed a team-high 15 kills on the night. Bell added a .286 hitting percentage, while Claybaugh totaled 13 digs. Freshman middle blocker Grace Burkett (Lakeside, Calif.) recorded a career-high 11 kills, to go along with a team-best .350 hitting percentage. Burkett registered the set-clinching kill in set three for the River Hawks. 

Senior outside hitter Masha Yelsukova (Santa Clara, Calif.) also chipped in with 10 kills and seven total blocks. Junior co-captain Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) once again led the way for the River Hawks on defense with a match-high 22 digs. 

Junior setter Delaney Mendez (Phoenix, Ariz.) posted 30 assists, while sophomore McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.) managed 20 assists in the match vs. the Wildcats.

UMass Lowell also got some strong serving from freshman middle blocker Jessica Jubb (Millis, Mass.) who totaled a match-high four service aces. Junior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) notched a match-high 11 total blocks, which was one short of tying her career-high. 

The River Hawks posted 18 kills and a .300 hitting percentage in their third set win. 

UMass Lowell returns to action on Saturday, September 23rd against Coppin State. Match time from Costello Athletic Center is 6 p.m.
